Jubilee...back to not running

Perhaps a few of you will recall I recently tracked down a short at the distributor and got my Jubilee up and running (the screw lost its insulating washer).

Well, it was running great and I got it stuck in the mud. I went back a couple days later and fired it up and let it run to get it warmed up so I could have another crack at getting it unstuck. I was doing some other work and after about 10 minutes the tractor stopped running. I could get it to briefly sputter for a few seconds. But then it wouldn't even do this!

So, I pulled the points and condenser and put back in the Pertronix unit. Still won't start.

I pulled the coil lead and held it to the crankcase. I get a strong blue spark for a few cranks. Then, no blue spark!?!!?!

Any ideas?...I have fuel. The carb was cleaned and the sediment bowl cleaned out 2 weeks ago.

Paul.

if you have a resistor between switch and coil, it could be bad. RP

No resistor. Thanks for the suggestion.

Paul.

Sounds like I would try another coil. The only thing common to both points and the Petronix unit is the coil or also the key switch may be bad. I remember Dell talking about the key switch being bad would conduct power for a few minutes then heat up and be bad. Try bypassing the switch with a jumper around the switch is the first thing I would try and then check for spark from the coil. If you lose spark with the switch jumpered I would try another coil.
Be sure and give us some feedback as to what you find.
I installed the Petronix unit in my Jubilee a couple of weeks ago and am overjoyed with the increase in power and how fast it starts up.
Previously I had to choke my tractor until it warmed up, and now it requires very little choking. Must have much stronger spark now.
The Petronix unit won't help if the coil is bad.
Jim

I'll give your suggestions a try. But, I did install a new keyed ignition switch and coil 2 weeks ago. I guess they could be bad or flakey though.

Thanks,

Paul.

Paul you can run a wire directly from the hot cable of the battery to the coil and bypass the switch. You could then take a wire from the other side of the coil and everytime you touch it to ground you should get a spark from the coil wire. This is what the points do automatically.
This is a method of checking the coil and the switch at the same time.
Jim

Thanks Jim,

I'll do this. It may not be for a couple days due to work. I'll report back on the results.

Paul.

She is probably just mad at being left in the mud.

Unfortunately, she is still in the mud and will stay there until she starts back up!
