Compression readings after a new head gasket

Dell, you asked me how the compression had changed since I installed new head gasket. The answer is: I'm not sure. I think one or both readings is wrong. What'd you think?

Before:
Dry #1 100, #2 80, #3 90, #4 100
Wet 155, 140, 115, 185

After
Dry 85, 75, 75, 80
Wet 100, 90, 100, 90

I may have used too much oil first time but only 2 squirts in each this time. But, I don't know what happened to the Dry readings. Doesn't make sense to me. I have a new screw-in flex hose gage. Same gage both times. I cleaned old gasket off the head and block down to bare cast iron. Chased threads in block til I could screw in cap screws with fingers. Lubed and torqued new cap Ford screws to 70 ft-lbs using a 3 step sequence.

Bottom line: It does run somewhat better after head gasket.

There are some things that can affect the accuracy of a compression test. If any of these were different from one test to the next, the results could be biased: Engine temperature at the time of the test has a large affect. Barometric pressure during the test can make about a 5-6 psi difference. Outside air temp can also affect the readings by several psi. If the new gasket was a whole lot thicker than the old one, you'd get less total pressure, but it would have to 'a whole lot' thicker. (gasket thickness makes a slight difference in compression ratio). I've also noticed a big affect if the carb & air cleaner are installed/not installed during a compression test. Any way, Dell's right: If it works and makes you happy, worry about something else.

Ray..... .I would normally expect about 10-15 psi increase wet over dry in a good but worn engine. 25 psi in a worn out engine.

I don't know why your drys change so much to the worse.

Bottome line as far as I'm concerned, ya gotts a tired but servicable engine...BUT... as long as it starts eazily for you and has enuff power for you and has reasonable oil consumption, it ain't broke, donnna go fixxin it, unless ya gotts lotts of $$$ burnie in yer pocketts.
