A way to remove stuck valve guide

Just thought I'd share this with anyone who is interested. I had a valve guide that was REALLY STUCK. I had seven valves out but this one would not budge up or down. After soaking it overnight with Marvel mystery oil, I tried to pry it out with a long pry bar, using a 30" tall lawn timber as a fulcrum placed just inside the radius arm. I thought for sure that would do it, but it didn't. I'm sure if that had worked the valve would have popped out with such force that I would have had to patch a hole in the garage ceiling.

Here is what did work. After being sure the whole valve, spring and all, had been soaked with Marvel oil, I compressed the spring and knocked out the keepers by tapping the valve down hard with the wooden handle of a hammer. I released the spring, then removed the valve from the top, leaving the stuck guide in place. It took a little work, but I got the spring and the retainer at the bottom of the spring out the side, through the valve cover opening. I placed a short piece of 1/2" pipe down the valve opening and rested it on the valve guide, then struck it with a hammer. The guide broke free, and I was able to tap on the pipe until the guide worked its way down thru the bottom of the hole.

After cleaning the outside of the guide and the inside of the guide hole in the block with some fine grit sandpaper, the guide slided in and out just like all of the rest.

I hope this helps someone else with a REALLY STUCK valve guide some day.
