Hi All---2N leaking oil where lower lift arm attaches to lower axle housing. Outside nut does not tighten up to stop leak. Archives indicate only fix is to remove axle trumpet to get at the nut on the inside of the housing--anyone know of an easier fix? Thanks, Tim

Remove the left axle housing (left when you're seated on the tractor) and you can reach the right side also. If somebody ever tells you to bang em up as tight as you can when you tighten them, don't believe it. Don't ask. Get the proper torque and use that. I RTV'd mine when I reinstalled them. Don't know if that was necessary but, no leaks in 10 years.

I had a similar problem with a 9n I had. I removed the rear pto and was able to get my hand and an adjustable wrench through the hole and hold the inner nut.

DSW--your idea is interesting, however I am a little too short for my weight, and probably would have a time getting my meat hooks into the PTO hole, but if I could, how did you get the cotter pin off/on? Thanks, Tim

Sorry, there's no easier "fix". The pin is loose, and needs to be tightened. It's as simple as that.

There is NO easy fix to these leaks. The 9-N and 2-N tractors have a different taper on the pin shaft than the 8-N's and later tractors. I just did a major repair on a 2-N last week and had to remove both rear axle housings to do the repair. What I would suggest is NOT using the gasket between the outer plate and the housing after you TIGHTEN the inner nut and replece the cotter-key. Time will cause the gasket to fail / smash and then the nut will loosen because of the gasket thickness "leaving in time". Use a good silicone material when you re-assemble the pin system. Ford still sells NEW pins for the 9-N and 2-N tractors "brace yourself when you ask for a price"! I have not found any aftermarket replacement pins on the market. I did make new pins for the 2-N I just fixed. The inner taper is critical and is a 4-1/2 degree angle (where the pin fits to the outer metal bracket). The Pins fit tight into the housing. If the pins are loose in the housing then New pins will have to be installed. Get that inner nut tight!!
