I'm attempting to rebuild a 1946 2N. After pulling apart the valves in preperation for shipping the block out to be cleaned, I realized... I haven't a clue how to adjust these valves after I get back the block. Everyone is telling me the adjustment is on the tappets but there is nothing. Is this normal, or has someone tampered with this engine at some point?? All I see is valve, guide, spring, keeper, and tappet. Thanks.

Fer enny one who use’izz used adjustable lifters you need to have the hex screw dressed also, you chuck the lifter in a valve machine and dressed the same way you dress the valve stem. If you do not have the hex screw resurfaces I would adjust the valves a few tho less to take up fer the ware on the hex screw.

You have to lap in your valves and check the lash. If its too little , then you have to butt face or grind the valve stem to the proper clearance. If its not enough , then you need to have your valve ground a little. (if its close , you may be able to lap it some more ) I have a kwik way valve grinder , so its no problem , just time consuming. Adjustable lifters are about $10 each , or $80 for a set. It would probably be cheaper to get a set of adjustables than to pay a machine shop to do it.

Check the valves and seats before you buy anything , you might need to get the machine shop to take care of that while its there , if there bad.

What a pain. How would you increase valve lash, a new valve??

To INCREASE valve lash, you grind a little off of the bottom of the stem. (Valve grinders have a V-block attachment, so this can be done accurately.)

To DECREASE valve lash, you chuck the valve back in the valve grinder, and grind a little of of the "face".

Make sure you break the hex loose before you install’em or you will break the wranch’izz, they are no good if one izz broke, I prefer to drill a hole in the block so one kin install a punch to hold the slot in the tappet. I have a pix sumwere that shows the holes in the block. The adjustable lifters were never installed from the factory/new Only installed at the dealer when a valve job wuz done, its possible hiz engine has never been into that may be good.

The older tractors had non-adjustable tappets.

Similar to small air-cooled engines (before the advent of the OHV's), you have to grind the end of the valve stems to get the desired tappet gap.

In your rebuild, you can switch to adjustable tappets.

I didn't know that about the 9Ns.

But they can be replaced with the adjustable ones available on this site it seems....
