8N hydraulic adjustment

My 1951 8N's hydraulic system has an up range, a
down range, and a neutral position about halfway
between. I can not just set the lever at a point
in the quadrant and have the system go there and
hold that position. I have to use the up range to
get to the right height and then find the neutral
point to stop movement. Is this normal or how do
I correct it?? Haven't seen this particular
problem in the archives. Thanks in advance.

Sorry, should have been more clear. It makes no
difference whether the draft control lever is
vertical or horizonal. It was that way when I
bought it. Most of the time I use the lift either
full up or full down, so it hasn't been a problem. But it needs to be fixed, and now I know what to
do about it (thanks to this forum). Thanks for
all responses!!

The small mode changing lever that is located just under the seat on the right side of the lift housing should be up. When it is down it is in the draft mode and when up it is in the postion mode.

It is possible that the cam follower pin is worn completely out. This will cause it to loose it's positionc control and only draft will be in both mode settings if this happens.

If you will click on the link that is highlighted on the bottom of this page it may be of some help to your problem.

You DO have the position control selector in the vertical position, don't you?

since he didn't mention it bg I think he may not know what it is....

The draft/position control lever is the small lever on the right side of the tranny just below the operator seat. Draft control for implements in the ground, position control for above the ground.

The device is found on 8Ns not 2 or 9Ns.
