Stays or Stabilizers for 2N drawbar?

I recently bought a 1944 2N with a rear blade. In the summer I will want to pull a ground-driven manure spreader, but I don't have a drawbar. I plan to buy a drawbar and, if necessary, additional pieces to stabilize the 3-point hitch. My question is, What should I get? A drawbar stay kit that attaches to the top center of the 3-point system, or stabilizer bars that attach to the axle housing, one by each rear wheel?

Original Setup? in reply to Tim in MI, 01-18-2007 13:31:39
I was surprised that no one showed the set up (which I believe was from the dealer) on the 2 N my dad brought home when i was 6. It had two links that attached to the top three point pin behind the seat and each brace slid on the drawbar pin prior to the drag link going on.

That locked the draw bar in position The links were flat iron and slotted with bolts so the height of the drawbar could be adjusted.

To me that would be the only way to go, but don't know if aftermarket stuff like that is out there. Our sugar spreader was single axel and the tongue weight made the little grey best walk out of the feed lot on its hind legs - good for traction though. Mmmmmm mmm, did that smell good, speciqally when spreading down wind.

You definately dont need stabilizer bars. They may be nice for a blade etc. but I hauled manure in a spreader for years without stabilizer bars.

Tim...here's a pic of SouNguy's homemade fixed hitch. It doesn't require stabilizers or stay bars. You use a longer toplink that pins in the bracket on top of the hitch, set it to the height you want. The "V" legs pin to your stabilizer brackets(under the fenders).

I'm not aware of anyone selling or manufacturing them, you have a welder?

The white arrow shows a adjustable stabilizer bar. In this application the 3 point lift will still go up and down but will not sway back and forth.

Stay bars that attach to the top of the three point hitch do just that. The lift does not go up and down it "stays" in the position you set the bars to.

Thanks for the photo. Would I be correct in assuming you have a stabilizer bar on each side? Or not? I've noticed that my 2N has a connector plate & pin on the left side of the rear axle, but not on the right, which seems strange to me.

I have stabilizer bars on both sides but with a light implement you should only need one on one side to do the trick. As a kit you get brackets for both sides. This site sells them or if you have a tractor supply nearby you can get what you need for the other side. I have a brush mower that I use with my tractor and the sway bars keep it from swinging back and forth behind me.

The stays will keep the lift arms at a constant pre-determined height. You may also want to invest in a drawbar lock to keep the drawbar from trying to spin when you are hooking up the honey wagon.
PS. when using stays, lock your 3 point control lever in the down position so you accidentaly don't raise it and bend your new stays all to heck. Jeff

Stay bars for the manure spreader.
Stabilizer bars for the back blade.

Do the stabilizers still allow you to tilt the blade?

Yes, & lift is fully operational with stabilizer bars. Lift has to be locked down (or PTO off - even better) when stay bars are installed. Drawbar rotation is not a problem if your spreader attaches with a pin through holes in the tongue above and below the drawbar - only a problem with a ball trailer hitch - then you will need the antirotation lock.

You need the one that attaches up at the top link to hold the the drawbar down, it can want to 'lift' if you come to a sudden halt, go downhill, etc.

You will definitely need the stabilizer bars that attach to the lower axle housing on each side. How will the spreader attach to the drawbar? Is it just a U-shaped opening on the end of the spreader tongue? If it is, then you won't even have to worry about the drawbar pivoting. Just drop a solid pin through the U once it straddles the drawbar and lines up with one of the drawbar holes. I'd use a pin with a keeper.

The connector on the spreader is just a pin-type, so I"m not concerned about the drawbar rotating. Maybe I don"t even need anything else to stabilize it?
