Hi Folks, I've been reading this forum for some time now and have gleaned a wealth of information about the N's. I have a 52 8N sidemount. rebuilt the engine during summer 2005.
Now I need your help. The transmission is making a lot of noise and due to some encouragement from someone who posts here, I'm gonna try to rebuild it. I've changed many transmissions, never been inside one. I need all the tips I can get from you who've been there. I want to do it right the first time. no fun splitting the tractor! Feel free to e-mail with any advice or post here. Thanks again for a great site.

Take lots of digital pictures as you take it apart. Along with an exploded diagram you can do it no problem. I love the "N" tractors , they didn't put any useless garbage on it and they kept it simple.

Go for it, Pete. fred is right; get the I&T FO-4 Shop Service Manual (available from this site) and remember, Henry knew he couldn't sell anything "magical" to a practical farmer.
The FO-4 has about one page of text and one page of pictures to get you through the job.
Good luck.
Russ

first, get yourself agood manuel. trannmissions are not complicated. i`ve done everything from escorts to scrapers! some even showed up in boxes. whenever you take apart off lay it on a clean bench in the order it comes apart and in the same direction it was assembled. i.e. don`t turn the parts over just lay`em down the way they come out and you`ll do allright.remember it only has 4 speeds, no planets, clutch packs or twin timed countershafts! goodluck
