My 8N is still not running and I have a few more questions.

1) Is there a way I can test the condesor to see it it went bad? A way to test the coil? And how do I bypass the on/off switch to see it that went bad?

2) When I replaced the distributor cap (front mount) I did not replace the rotar. Was that a bad idea?

3) When I pulled off the distributor cap, I notice that there some metal shavings on the inside of the cap and I pulled off the rotar and the metal tab that touches the inside of the distibutor cap almost looks like is bent to the side a little, like it got caught on something and twisted.

Once again, thank you to all that have given advice in the past!

Olaf

There is a ceramic bushing on the outside of the dist. that can wear out causing the dist to ground out check it for any cracks

I had the same problem this summer. Come to find out the points had closed up. All I did was regap them and she strted right up. If I recall correctly, can't you do a continuity check on both the condensor and coil to check for leakages between the primary & secondaries? Years ago, I recall a bench type device that would performance check both

Do a search on the forum for bench testing. Its way easier to trouble shoot the front mount distributor on the bench than on the tractor. It can save you hours of scratching your head wondering what is going on. Make sure that your points aren't grounded.

The aftermarket parts available for the N tractors are sometimes crap! That is probably what happened to the distributor cap. Probably the rotor was the right one and fit as it should but the replacement cap was a Chinese or Indian import that was manufactured in some poor slobs home cook stove???? Some of the Chinese and Indian iron parts actually are cast in some poor slobs back yard furnace from scrap metal etc. Probably some of the other parts are too. Would have to be looking at the price that is paid for these imports by the whole salers.

I would suggest ath you buy American made ignition parts for your N. I think you will come out better financially and mentally.

I keep an 2-3 ft. piece of wire with alligator clips on each end in the tractor tool box. Comes in handy works well to check your ignition switch by cliping it on before and and after the switch thereby bipassing it. Condensers are cheap, just replace it and keeep a couple on hand. Rotors are also cheap, replace it. Yours had a problem that sounds like it was not pushed all the way down on the shaft. It being bent was probably the result of it being off center and digging into the top of of the cap. They often click when inserted all the way down. Metal shavings in the cap could be caused by the distributer bushings being worn or again the rotor was not installed properly. Take hold of the distributer shaft and try to wiggle it back and forth. A "very little" wiggle is acceptable, but a lot suggest that they need replacing. Easy job. However, even a little wiggle or play will effect the performance because it causes the points to go off their setting of 15/1000. Good luck. Ron

Hey Yuper, got any snow up there?

We here in the south (Grand Haven area) have just gotten our first accumulation for "07. I think we have about 10" on the goround with another 3 forecast for today. Reports are also warning of "significant lake effect" accumulations for tomorrow. No safe ice on any of the lakes anywhere around.

Hi Bob.Your not going to believe this, but we probably only have about 5-6 inches in Marquette. 10 miles west from the Big Pond about a foot and at our camp 60 miles west of here only about 4-5 inches. We are having an almost snowless winter, but there is enough for snowmobiling, cross country skiing, rabbit hunting and the ice is now thick enough for fishing. Plowed the camp road for the first time this winter last week to level it off in preparation for more snow. Broke the plunger that the threaded control yoke screws onto. Found one about 140 miles from here. Great winter so far. Ron

Can condensors just go out for no reason? A friend of mine thought if some moisture got in the cap and after I started it the moisture heated up and could fry the condensor. Is that a realistic possiblity?

No, not really. The usual first sign of condenser failure is a run time of 1 minute or less & burnt points. Over the years, my bet is 75% of coils & 95% of condensers taht are replaced did not need replacing,. Having said that, always replace the condenser & rotor when you replace the points.
