This weekend I picked up our 1st ford N tractor, a 1946 2N. I has started fixing things, the left brake pedal is flopping down on the running board like it's not connected to anything. The right pedal seems to have resistance but does nothing to stop the tractor. I have removed the left wheel and the bolts holding the hub to the axle housing. The drum / axle don't want to pull free from the differential despite repeated whacks with a dead blow hammer. Nothing seems to be budging. Do I have to remove/disconnet anything else? I have an original 69 page service manual, it leave a lot to be desired in terms of instruction. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am rebuilding the carb, seems to run good with a little choke and Autolite 437 plugs. Thanks in advance.

Sorry to have to tell you this but you aren't going to be able to fix that seal if and when you do get the axle and hub out of the trumpet housing. The bearing and the bearing collar are a very secure fit on the axle and nothing is going to get them off the axle so you can get to the seal that is commonly available to the average machine shop or mechanic shop. If the collar which is shrink fit to the axle is cut off then it is possible to press the axle out of the bearing if there is a really big long strong press available with about 50000 pounds capacity to push it off with. Then it will have to be pressed back on after the seal is replaced and a new collar heated and shrunk back ontot he axle to hold the whole thing together.
There is a repair called a "Sure Seal" that is a fix that does not require the bearing and collar being removed. It is driven onto the hub/seal retainer and has a seal that rides on the unfinished portion of the axle. There in lies the problem with the sure seal. It is a better fix than nothing but not really a positive seal.

I have had good luck with a process using silicone caulking and Teflon tape on the axle to seal a leaking axle. I have done it on several tractors with that type seal and none of them are leaking at present.

AXLE LEAK FIX WHEN NO INNER SEAL ON AXLE AS WITH OLDER 8Ns AND 9N/2N ALSO THE TO FERGUSONS

If the hub is not extremely tight so that you have to have a puller to get it off I think you can replace the seal yourself. If the hub is tight that is a good sign you might get it to stop leaking. The problem with the 48 8N is that it does not have an inner seal like the 51 and 52 do. If the hub is loose on the axle and it can't be tightened because of the spline being worn too much to allow any more tightening then you will not be able to stop the leak the conventional way unless you replace the axle and hub. I hope that is not the case.

If the axle is worn too much to allow it to be tightened then you might consider my fix for the leak and leave the hub loose a few more years. To fix the leak my unconventional way you pull the axle away from the axle housing about 6 or 8 inches and wrap the axle for about 6 inches from the outer end of the axle that is exposed with teflon tape.Wipe all the oil from the housing and then take a caulking tube full of silicone glue and pump it into the void between the axle and the housing. Keep the hub as close to the housing as you can till you get the silicone pumped in.Use the whole tube and then replace the axle into the housing and replace the bolts etc. Let the silicone cure overnight and then you can go about using the tractor. Be sure that the oil in the rearend etc is not over full as this will contribute to the axle leaking.

On your way to fix a seal leak do you wrap the axle with just one layer of teflon tape and what is the purpose of putting on the teflon tape?

Yes I wrap it with the Teflon to prevent the silicone sticking to the axle. Just one layer.

I like Hobo's idea of using silicone to fix a telescoping yoke on a drive shaft too!

I Kin Answer That since I real that tip I have fixed quit a few parts wif that set up. The tape acts as a barrier to keep the silicon from stick’in to the shaft till it has time to set up. The tape does not harm the seal you just made and that tape should not harm enny thang else in the system. I Have wrapped the splines on a slip yoke on the drive shaft then slide the yoke on then build a seal wif silicon after the silicon sets up I wrap it wif good electrical tape werks great. The guys down at the clay pit have sealed all the shafts that go into the mine or around the grinders wif this tip.

I am working on my 9N as we speck, just remove the rear axle to replace the seal and clean the brakes . Remove the nuts (6) from the studs from the axle housing, The entire housing and brake pedal rod is coming out, use the hammer and hit the lip around until is loose, hope you don't have the gasket glued whit silicone , it wheel make it harder , if you do apply heat a torch is the answer. Any questions give me a call 201 357 8763 Russ

I haven't any experience with the 9/2N axles yet, there is a more in depth IT 04 manual available here on this site as well as local tractor dealerships if you don't want to wait. The archives are full of info, as I've seen it myself discussed here many times. I'd hesitate any drastic action til I knew what to expect. Glad ya found us. There will be more exp. people along soon, I'm sure. HTH

I also noticed that the brake adjusting stems are missing, anybody have a source for 2N brake parts? I have a 13lb slide hammer and was thinking of making some adapters to bolt to the lug bolts and use the slide hammer to hammer the axle assembly loose. Any pros or cons?

Rick,

As I recall, the second thing I did was clean the outside of the brake drum so it wasn't slippery. Then I beat a screwdriver in between the bearing retainer and the trumpet. My main problem was not having the weight off the outer end, either with another person or and overhead hoist. Once I got a little gap with the screwdriver, then lifted the outer end a little, it slid right out. HTH
