Does anyone know where I can buy a new 8 volt battery for my 8N? Model numbers would be helpful. Shoul I consider a 12 volt conversion instead of replacing this battery? What are your thoughts?

Arguing about 8 volt battery in a 6 volt system is about like arguing about what oil to use. They work just fine. I have 4 6 volt tractors and one has had an 8 volt battery ever since I've had it. It will crank over faster and start a little easier and is certainly a lot cheaper than coverting to 12 volt. Easeier to recovert back to 6 volt also. Lights may burn out a little faster, but really, how much do you use your tractor in the dark?

I have to travel on the hiway to get to my wood lot and use my lights a lot.I keep a good battery in my tractor and have no starting problems.Tractor are often stuck with worn out batteries.30.00 will buy a new 6 volt battery here. Most tractors I see have poor battery cables.

At best an 8 volt battery is a stop gap fix for other problem. Plus the chargeing system will not keep it charged unless it has been tweeked to do so. I'd either go with a 6 volt like it had when new or do the 12 volt convertion. Plus do you know how hard it is to find a charger to charge an 8 volt battery

8 volt will overheat all of your 6volt circuits.Going 12volt will reduce your amperage flow by 50 percent. So the 6volt wiring is about twice as heavey as it would be for 12volt.One exception is the output lead of the alternator.CENTAUR

An 8 volt battery will give trouble.Head light and tail bulbs and your work light bulb will have a short life.If you have a front mount distributor the coil and points will be at risk. You can adjust the regulator up to the 9.5 volts required to charge the 8 volt battery but the shunt coil may open from the excess voltage. The last head light I bought for my tractor cost 14.00 plus 2 gallons of gas to get it.Generators tend to throw solder at 9.5 volts.

I"ve got an 8 volt on my 8N also. Frist time I ever heard of one. Thought it was very strange.I"m going to let the next owner worry about replacing it. TSC has them here in Pa.

Any GOOD parts store, or any store that specializes in batteries, can furnish a Group 1 - 8-Volt battery. Also, a GOOD automotive electric place can set your regulator to keep the 8-Volt charged. I put a 1-wire 8 volt alternator on one 8N and it worked just fine. The increased starter speed was just what it needed. ('48 front mount distributor.)

RJW, from my understanding of generators on the N even if ye install a 8 volt battery ye 6-volt system will only keep it charged up to 6 volts, so ye may as well stay with 6 volts unless ye are gonna keep it charged up wif a 8 volt charger and I never heard of one of those. Up to you it is your tractor but that 8 volt battery will soon be a 6 volt.I don't know if the voltage regulator can be adjusted to compensate fer the 8 volt battery or not.

24 years ago I bought my 41 9-N. It has had an 8 volt battery ever since, on advice from my learned father in law, ( an International Harvester fan, and Bears fan. I never held either one aganst him ). In the 24 years I have replaced the coil only one time, the points only two times. Old Hank has been worked hard and long.

So if you want to reinstall an 8 volt battery, go forth with confidence. In the end it is your choice. My only words of wisdom would be " KISS" = Keep It Stock,Simple

So that would have to be 5, 6 or 7 or 8, 8 volt batteries later?

I have never seen a 5 year battery last over 5 years and maybe a couple of months.

And you have never rebuilt the engine in that time?

Just curious.

Dunk, do not rember how many batteries, every 2 or 3 years. He ran very low oil pressure most of that time, smoked some at the end. Still puled a 5 foot bushhog. When I bought the tractor had a repaired block. I would say "Hank" had a hard life. Last year I treated him to a newer block and complete rebuild. Still on 8 volt though.

"KISS" " Keepin It as Stock as possable."

Joe
