I am the proud owner of a '47 2n that I have had for 6 yrs. It smoked when I got it and after using it all this time, I decided to have our local mech. rebuild The engine. I used to do all my own mech. work and decided to rebuild one myself. I advertized on the classified ads and Picked one up for $300. that was dissasambled from the rear axle forward. With it came a lot of stuff I have never seen before. One item is a chain with a warning plate and a plate which has a bent tab that is supposed to be used on the hyd operating lever somehow. Another is a tray that goes under the battery door and covers the battery. The tranny had all the gears out including an aux tranny. The aux tranny was allowed to weather and it is frozen up. How can I free this up so I can clean it up to use? How can I tell if it is step up, step down or both. Also included was another tranny that LOOKS in good shape. It also has an aux tranny installed. This one does not have a hand operated looking shifter. It has a lever that looks like it would be foot operated. What is this?? How can I tell what this is. Where can I get operating info on these?? Any info greatly appreciated. I know you guys will come thru again.
Thank U
Richard

Rich,

ALL rust/oxidation can be neutralized by 'electrolysis'. Google or archive search it here. I've salvaged many types of seemingly 'solid' gearboxes with it. Worst I've ever had was a Aeromotor windmill gearhead exposed to weather for who knows how long.

As far as being able to advise you on repair/use of your Aux trannies, I'll need more info to determine just what you have.

Tell me more about it/them. Post pics or compare to what you find on the 'net when you search a bit and post back.

jim

Using info given to me here, I went to the Smith site. Seems one of the trannys is a HUPP overdrive. It is complete. The other is a Sherman step up, guessed at because of it's color. That is the one that is weathered and is missing the front cone and shaft. what is missing may be in with some of the stuff I havent gotten to yet. I'm going to research this electrolisis and see if I can clean it up. Maybe someone can use it.

Well, if you have plenty of time and want to see how you can bring yourself a bit of return on it, cleaning ANY of these old tractor parts usually is worth it. BUT, don't spend any $$ on Step-UP/Overdrives because their re-sale potential isn't all that great. I have a fistfull of Sherman Step-ups that will sit long enough to turn a profit. Good luck on your project! 'N'joy,
jim

Hey Richard.. Do live in the sunizona or sunsites area off of hwy 191?? I think I talked w/ you a good while back. I was looking for an 8n or any N series. I bought a 48 8n in july-06 & am havin a good time w/ it. We have had too much cold weather this winter, but still do something w/ it almost every day. I had a major computor crash last spring & lost all addresses & etc. Later Wayne

Richard..... ..the chain & tab is a safety link to STOP you from raising yer hippy "hy-trol" lever when you have height control "Stay-Bars" mounted between yer 11-hole drawbar and yer butt-buckett top-link. Yer hydraulics can BEND the jingle bars iff'n you fergitt so Ford thoughtfully provided a chain to prevent that. Isn't that clever? (BTW, its rare 'cuz they're eazily LOST)

The fuel-door BATTERY COVER is 'nutter' one of Ford safety ideas. Rare and sought after by collectors.

Not certain about yer aux-tranny situation. The more common aux-trannys are ENCLOSED CASE and mounted between the clutch-plate and the front of regular tranny input. Usually have a shifter lever over yer toe.

Howsomevers; the rare and fragle HOWARD is an open frame aux-gearbox mounted on backside of tranny between the diffy input shaft. It has a shifter lever in the 6"round tranny dipstick plate behind yer right heel.

The only toe operated lever that I'm familiar with is the Dowden foot throttle lever that makes FEL (front end loader) work faster than using the dashboard mounted throttle.

Here is a link to much more aux-tranny info..... .Dell
