I have done mine 3 times by my self. I learned from one of my ford manuals. The manual says to stand at the back of the tractor and tilt it into place. While it is resting on its rear most edge you can hold the front edge up about 1 inch with your left hand and use your right hand to guide the lever into the pump.
I think this method is better then when a helper tries to stab the fork for you. I have the electronic manuals on cd I think it is in the training manual. I also have a bad back but I do have very strong arms. Good Luck Rip.

Whan I was a lot younger, a lot stronger and a lot more foolish I always did it alone by myself. I just stood on the running board is they were still on the tractor and if not I stood on the axle housings and lifted the thing off by myself. I then sort of balanced it on the back of the differential till I could get around the wheel and picked it up and put it on a vice or a table to work on it.

Went back the same way. Balance it on the differential housing Climb on the tractor while still balancing it and then grabbed it by the left lift arm and the touch control quadrant and carefully lowered it onto the tractor. I didn't even try to place the control rod into the eye of the control valve till I got it laying on the tractor. Then I got off and went to the right side and lifted the right side of the lift housing with my left shoulder while I stuck my hand down in the oil and guided the contro rod into the control valve eye socket. then I aligned the gasket and put the bolts back in and tightened them up.

I did it similar to dan.. .. just grunt it off.. and then grunt it back on.

When i repalce dthe pump.. I did use a long handled screwdriver and a floor jack to get the arm and valve to line up... took a few minutes of monkeying around.. but worked fine..

I just took one off and use a come-a-long above it attached to the two seat bolts with a chain. Just crank it up and slide it out of the way. Lower it down and then grunt real hard lifing it up and putting it into the back of the pickup truck. That's my way of doing it. ron

Poot I would like to add one more thang. Fer sum reason when I werk on a lift system and have help I tell’em to start the tractor then I stand on the lift arms and werk the lift control like I am the smart one in the crowd. It did not take me long to figger out that a turning PTO will take on all comers and I like my manly voice and not look’in fer a change. Do not operate the lift from the rear of the tractor less you want to change yer 6exual preference that izz if you live thru it.

Hobo,
I learned about PTO's about 60 years ago. I always wanted to be around the tractor when it was in use, & one day I wanted to show my Uncle how much I had learned about hookin' things up. I ran right in there & WHAP! My Uncle went up side my head & said: " Stay the He## outta there boy! This thing will wadjer a$$ up!" After I got thru bawlin', he 'splained it to me. A real good, & quick lesson!
Poot, the edjicated.

I did mine by myself. Stand behind the tractor and install it that way. Also, get some 7/16" X 14 about 3" long and cut the hex head off the top. Screw two in at opposite corners to use as guides and to keep the gasket in place.

Good luck,
Dan
