Gravity stopped working on my 8N. I replaced the sediment bowl and installed a see through fuel filter. The engine runs for about fifteen minutes, until the filter empties. It then takes about an hour or so for the filter to refill. There is no obstruction in the fuel line from the sediment bowl. If I remove the sediment bowl fuel line from the top of the fuel filter there is no flow for the first split second. Then the flow seems normal. It's the same with the gas cap on or off.

Had a similar problem on my Jube. The fuel shutoff that the sediment bowl attaches to was plugged up. I replaced it with a new one...twice...and they allowed fuel to flow OK, but would not shut off with the valve and I lost gas through the leaky float in the carb. Ended up doing a cleaning of the original valve from 50 years of sediment (the inside screen had long ago dissolved away) and put it back in and it has been running fine...and shutting off easily...ever since.

The "see through" filter that you are using may be one designed for a fuel pump. I made a similar mistake on my JD (hush ma mouff), I did so when using a 'temp' gas supply while breaking in the rebuilt engine....mistake ( it turns out if you use a motor bike filter {gravity} it works) Hey Dell, you still using that 'wind up key' computer?, or did the moths leave the wallet?? I do not buy into the belief that a special filter izz needed for a gravity system, gas will run thru enny thang that’s not already stopped up with contaminates. The universal inline see thru or all metal can type do werk on a gravity flow system like you would find on a N. The type that I despise izz the glass type that you kin take apart and clean, they will stop up in a heart beat. I would remove the fuel line at the carb and sick it in a can or bucket and see just how long it will take before it peters out. I spec I have replaced as many if not more filters than 99.9 % of the folks that hang out here and would take a bet on it enny day. If the inline filter izz yer problem you best be look’in fer a new tank cuzz the one you have izz full of rust and dirt.

You have received several very good ideas. One more for your bag of tricks is to disconnect the fuel line from the carb and blow it out with compressed air. CAUTION make sure to remove the gas cap first or you will have a mess on your hands.

Rick..... .you write..... ."The engine runs for about fifteen minutes, until the filter empties. It then takes about an hour or so for the filter to refill"..... ..would it surprize you to learn that is just about the time frame for a CLOGGED inside the fueltank filter to leak-fill yer carburetor & extra filter?

Did you know that there is an inside the fueltank cylindric screen filter for bigg-chunks that eventually "melts" and cloggs the fuel-valve down-pipe? Unfortunately, the ONLY CURE is a brand NEW fuel-valve with new glass bowl screen.

As for yer extra fuel-line filter, as long as it looks EMPTY (no fuel) while running, it is working good. When it starts to fill-up with fuel, the filter is cloggin' and you need to replace it.

Don't forget, there is also a fuel-filter screen inside the carb elbow.

As the guys claim, you really don't need the 4th-filter, but I have no problem with 4-filters. I do every fall put some "dry-gas" in my tank (soaks up rust causing water) and then I also put some "Stabil" anti-clogging gas additive..... ..Dell

Thanks for the responses. I"ll try some of the solutions tomorrow. It"s good to know that, contrary to my first thought, the law of gravity has not been repealed.

Likely your see thru filter is not suited nor intended for gravity flow systems. Don"t need it anyway, N tractors already have 3 screens plus the sediment bowl, one screen in the tank, one in the sediment bowl and one on the carb inlet elbow.

ForS & G's.. run without the see thru filter and see if it 'fine'. If so.. i'd guess the see thru filter was not for a gravity feed system.

In other words.. if you have good fuel flow before the see thru filter.. and none after it.. then.. uh.. it's the filter ..

95% of the time when I see an inline fuel filter on a tractor I throw it as far away as I can. They are not made for gravity type fuel systems and cause more trouble then worth. Now if you have the type made for say a motor cycle or lawn mower they work but if its made for a car then throw it away and hook it up as it should be. I got a case of beer fixing the same problem last year. Guy said his tractor would run for a little bit then die and not start for a while. I looked at it removed the inline filter and it has run good ever since. He payed me by buying me a case of beer.
