Thankyou for the replies. it gives me a place to start. I have 3 8n, aford jublee, 801 and a ford 4000 and a JD 4000 and ACwd all have something wrong. they were my dads and there a lot of sentimental value. so i guess i had better become a mechanic or win the lotto and hire it done. thanks for the advice

First thing that comes to my mind izz the shifter has pulled up out of the slot were it fit’s the neutral gate. I could be as simple as to pull up the shifter and hunt for the slot it fits in, The top cover izz EZ to remove just be careful when you start to pull it up their izz a spring that izz held down at the middle rear between the hold down bolts that kin come up and out and fall into the case, most of the time it does not so lift just a little and look fer it and lift slowly till you know you it will not jump out. Than you kin inspect the shift rails for B’in loose on the shift rail. They are locked down with a screw so line it up and lock the shift rail to the shift fork. A nutter problem I have seen izz the reverse gear snap ring retainer will pop of and let the reverse gear run against the first gear shift fork and ware the main shaft slap out along with first gear. First gear will be the big’in at the rear of the shaft and if this izz a problem the edge of first gear will be worn rite bad and look like sumone took a grinder to it and tried to save the edge of the teeth off. If you see this the trans will have to be completely rebuilt..

I thought I had some serious problems brewing in one of my transmissions. The shifter was just flopping all over the place and I had to sort of tickle it out of gear before it would let me select another. So I pulled the top cover. I found a loose spring and a thing that looked like about 3/4 of a beat-up lock washer.

I got to looking in my parts manual and realized my shifter was also missing the pin that is supposed to go through the ball joint that keeps it from rotating. Mine was worn down to nothing.

I bought a new No. 7227 Spring, No. 7221 Pin, and No. 7228 Seat (the beat up washer thing). The parts were cheap and not hard to find. But installing them was a battle. Especially that seat for the spring. I cussed, fussed, and fought with it for about an hour. Had to go fish flying parts out of dark corners more than once. But the darn thing finally slid into place. When I reinstalled my top cover, it was like magic! The transmission shifts 10-times better than before!

Hope that is all yours is! KL
