Hello tractor world, thanks for all your replys to my ad yesterday. This is what I'm running into, this old 9n needs lots of work, also it was my grandfathers tractor. So I really don't want to sell it. I was just comparing apples to apples. Do I restore this old 9n or just sell it. All the sheet metal is to far gone to be saved. The engine need to be ruild built. Need all four tires, rims too. I could go on and on. So this is what I ask to the tractor world, I live outside of Detroit, Michigan. Does any know of a 9n tractor that is for sale for parts. Looking for everything that I stated above. I working with a low budget so I not looking for an expensive tractor for parts. They say if you reach out for help, someone might help me get started in the right direction..
Thanks again to everyone reply to my ad and have yourself a great day..... Anthony ps all your help is very greatly appreciative!!!!! !!

If you want to keep the tractor in the family and possibly pass it on to one of your children do as I did.My father inlaw passed away several years ago and I talked my mother inlaw to letting me have it rather than selling it to a fellow down the street for $500.It had a blown engine (BIG hole in # 1 cyl, the steering box was shot ,the three point didn't work,it had no grill, the tires were hooped, all the sheet metal was bad,the axle seals leaked.I could keep on going it would take too long.I took it apart piece by piece and started to rebuild it slowly. The steering box was first then I just kept on going as I saved up a little money. It took me over 2 years and countless hours and about $5000 in parts. But when it was done it felt Great. My father inlaw and mother inlaw are both buried in the cemetary right next to my property. The first ride I took was next door. I opened the gate and drove it right up to their resting spots and parked it there, said a couple of words.I'm sure that Heinz and Irene would be proud to see what I had done.My 7 year old grandson helped me with the project right from the beginning. He learned a lot.Mostly things don't happen over night but they do happen. The day we were done I gave it to him.The very next day we took it to town and entered it in the Victoria Day parade. He sure was one proud little boy.Oh by the way we got best of the parade and have a BIG blue first place ribbon that hangs in our shop.Just my 2 cents worth.Take some time to make your mind up as to what you want to do,don't rush.GOOD LUCK.

You face a difficult decision, regardless of what path you choose. I was moved by Ultradog's reply below. But the practical side of me can't bear to see one of these wonderful machines just sit and moulder away.

If you know what your grandfather would want you to do, that would make it easier to make a decision. One way you could look at this problem is like this: even with that tractor in as bad a shape as it is in, I'm sure it has many usable parts. Your grandfather's tractor could "live on" in some other folks' tractors - a transmission here, an axle there, and so forth. Sort of like donating organs when someone dies.

In the end it's your decision to make. But I would rather see it recycled into other people's tractors OR restored by you, rather than just sitting in a field to rust away. Hope my ideas help you.

Carl

Roger,

I'm in Superior Twp. Just east of AA in Dixboro. We have property just north of M-14 that we are building a new home on. That is where my 53 Jubilee is located.

Paul.

There are some awesome answers below, especially by Ultradog MN, and Ken (Ark)!!

I need a better tractor than my 49 8N, badly, and I have the money in the bank to buy one.

But there was a time when I didn't, and that ole 8N and me have been thru he!! together.

We have took my Daddy's place from gone, to a wonderful piece of property.

I bought it with some of the life insurance money on my Dad.

If I do ever decide to buy another tractor, I won't part with it. I can't.

That will be up to my heirs.

My Dad was 40 years old when I was born, and I am an only child, my Mom was 7 years younger than him, and I lost them both before I was 25 years old, I am 50 now.

If you folks still have your parents don't take it for granted, let them know how much you love them, and need them, before it is too late.

May God Bless You, each and every one.

Man, that's bitter pills Dunk. I lost my Mom to a gunman in '81 and I still miss her. My Dad's still as tough as nails and I drove an hour each way to visit him just today. He's still a great source for wise counsel and easy companionship. I can't even begin to imagine life without him.

I guess we'll have to be your family now. I'm in.

Yes and no on justice. He plead guilty to 2nd degree and got 6 years with an 'extra' year for the use of a gun. Did 4 years 8 months B4 parole. Hung himself 3 days after getting out. Go figure.

Wow Dunk. I too lost both parents and only sibling to a car wreck in May 1988. I was only 25 then. Now I have my own houseful of kids. And I totally agree it gives one a completely different perspective. I am completely sentimental about anything that belonged to my parents or grandparents. I now have my dads diesel tractor, my uncles 8N, another uncles Farmall B, and my grandpas Farmall B. I'll keep them forever!

I know I will be considered a heretic for this.
Maybe in more ways than one.

When my father died he left his 2N to me.
I put tires on it and got it running good, painted the hood etc, then bought a few tools to pull behind it.
I was hooked.
But...
I soon realized there were other, newer tractors out there so I sold the 2N and bought a Ford 3000.
Now I know my dad wasn't an emotional kind of guy so I am confident that if he saw my tractor today and knew I had parlayed his tractor in to the one I have he would be proud of me. He was pragmatic.
And I try to be the same.
That said, if you are interested in your granddads tractor because it was HIS then by all means restore it and enjoy it for what it is. But if you are interested in it because you need/want a tractor then sell it and use the $ to buy a better one. You will be money ahead.

Your best bet in my honest opinion is to let it set there and keep the good memories. You probably will never get enough money for it to be happy about selling it or you will wish you had it back later . Most of the people on here work on their tractors because they enjoy it . We usually have twice the money in it than it is worth . You don't want to halfass do it , so its going to cost $2500 + if you do most of the work. It's not costing a penny to set there . But if you hade to ask what to do with it , then its not really a project that you need to take on right now. I'm not trying to burst your bubble or let you down , it kind of the same for me . I have so many projects that I want to do , but if I live to be 150 I won't get them done .

Ken, I couldn't agree with you more....The only other thing that comes to mind is to make sure the tractor is properly mothballed and pickled for the time being...

Anster,I"ll add this for thought,,, My oldest son had (2)Ns parked in the bushes, not running and in BAD shape. He is needing a little help so I go and get both tractors and start work on them. Both will cost big && but he's helping so I don't factor in the $$.Weigh all the factors.

I don't have a parts tractor or know of one nearby. But, there are several of us on this forum from Michigan. Where in the Detroit area are you? There is a shop in Hamburg, MI that does a lot of N series tractor work.

His name is Skip. Here is his contact info:

11400 Old Hamburg Rd.
Hamburg MI. 48139

(810) 231-3361

I have never contacted him or been to his shop. So, using my name as a referral won't mean much to him! :-)

Paul.

You can see a forum post with pics of his shop by going to the "other" N tractor forum and searching for: "I checked out Skips Ford 841 Diesel 4x4 today"

Anster, from what your saying and discribing, you have a tractor that is going to cost big $$.But you say it has a sentimentle "value".Big call!! I would suggest you put some figures togather and decide if you want to go that much.Believe me the list begins too grow so factor that in also. That will make the picture clearer.
