I have tried a new garage in town to bleed brakes on my daughter"s "96 taurus. I had replaced the rear calipers/pads/rotors due to one of the calipers hanging up. I could not get the air out of the system and decided to seek professional help. The garage found a stuck proportioning valve and replaced that to the tune of $390.00 Now 1 week later with the car 90 miles away at college the pedal is nearly to the floor.

I know these ABS equipped cars can be tricky to bleed but I"m kind of in a quandry. Do I go get it, bring it back 90 miles to the local guy or take it to the Ford dealer in the college town?

You guys are always a good sounding board.

Inform the guy who did the werk and git his input. Sign up for AAA-plus, I have AAA plus just for this and I have a tow truck but the price of fuel the fact I can not git their quick, hope that it can git handled and if a tire or something minor it can be done reasonable (altho it seams we git stuck with the highest price tire in stock BTDT). I brought my daughter a Honda that had a tow bar on it so it may come in handy on a high mileage car. Just did the brakes on a 04 ford x-ploder and the right rear caliper wuz stuck 60K on the clock and no abuse go figger.

Bob, the stuck valve was that way from trying to bleed the rear lines without doing the front also. The valve is set up to close off one system if there is a leak,(like someone opening a bleeder). The valve was just doing one of the things it was designed to do. Opening one of the front bleeders would likely have "unstuck it". The front and rear have to be bleed alternately (one bleed on the rear, one bleed on the front etc. etc.)

My advice, Keep these things in mind and follow BDT's advice.

Do you or daughter have the AAA+ plan that gives 100 mile towing? When my kids were in college, I bought that plan and then set my mind at ease with not needing to worry about their old cars especially on a late Sunday night. We had a few of them brought home on the hook, and the kid "safely" riding in the truck cab.

Next best thing is using a car hauling trailer or dolly. Maybe you have one or can borrow one. The kid's tired iron came home a few times on the flatbed trailer before I got the AAA as Christmas presents for them. 90 miles isn't that far to drive to get it.

Be Safe!!

You are the one that did it , that much is obvious . We can trace your indivdual computer if we need to. Let's just let it go and try to be positive and help people here. Thanks - Ken

Step one is to get in touch with your local guy and tell him about the problem, and see what he has to say...

I think that I would probably take the car, along with a photocopy of the receipt for the work done by the former mechanic, to the local dealership near your daughter's college. Sometimes dealerships will honor other dealership repair work warranty.

Also, get in touch with the dealership who alreadey did the brake job and advise them of your situation. HTH John,PA

"One week" later I'd fetch it home and have the guys who did the original repair work fix it (assuming it can be safely driven).

TOH
