Man it makes you feel dumb when you know not to do something and you still do it. My Bat Charger has a boost on it for starting " CARS " in the cold. It puts out 55 amps on boost. Well to make a long story short I hooked it up to "Daisy" and didnt look at the settings. So 55amps to the coil and my EI. POOF I let out the smoke. You know all electronic things run on smoke. You let the smoke out the smoke and it no worky. So now we have 9" of new snow and Daisy not working. Well the new EI and coil will be in on WEN. So we can plow out then. So I said all that to remind you all to check the settings on your charger when you hook it to your N.

Keep warm
Rod

The only other thing i can think of is the key got left on ( could be i gess if I could do one dumb thing I could do another) that would bake the coil and EI as well. still another thing NOT to do. LOL oh well gess thats a good reason to grab a beer and do zip. I dont work on daisy or anything els for that matter wile drinking LOL

Rod you need to install a light,on dash to warn you that the switch is on. I used an LED - 12 volt fron Radio Shack, They have red, green, and amber. My 9 is still 6 volt the LED works great. I just have to rember to check it. Joe

LOL, expensive love affair. Let's see, $13.99 for NAPA breaker point set, divided into....

The Pertronix Ignitor units are too "stupid" to switch the coil current "OFF" if the ignition switch has been left "ON" without the engine running.

If the engine has stopped with one of the 4 magnets that trigger the module in the "right" area, the module will switch coil primary current "ON", just like a set of breaker points that are "closed".

That will heat the coil and module, AND drain the battery. With the battery charging, and the switch left "ON", you "sealed the deal" that sooner or later the smoke would be let out of the coil and/or the module.

Pertronix Ignitor II units, for those applications for which they are available, are "smarter", and will shut down the coil current when the engine isn't "running" or "cranking".

I hate when that happens. It happens to the best of us. When I do something like that, I usually know instantly that I screwed it up - but it's too late. Oh well, live and learn.

Hmm.. I'm not following.

If it was a 12v system.. using the 'start option isn't much different than jumping from another battery.

Only thing I can think of is that the booster puts out something weird like 17v to get the extra current.. however.. if your main battery was low.. that voltage should have been loaded and lower.. still closer to 12v.. etc.

Now... if this was a 6v system, and you hooked a 12v booster to the battery.. then yeah.. i agree.. dumb move.

Guess you were wishin you had points right about now huh?

Ohms law says if resistance is constant(battery being charged)Voltage has to be raised to increase current. These boosters used to have momentary switches so this would not happen. Check output voltage and surprise yourself. Do you remember the auto device, couple switches and duplex that would allow alternator on car to rise to 80 or 90 volts allowing use of drills, saws, lights and other devices using universal motors(brushes). Nobody would believe it until they saw it work. Engine had to be revved purty high. But good for emergencies.

While not in so many words.. i think I said that.. that.. in order to get that extra boost current.. the supply votlage would have to be allowed to be higher, that is.. assuming a steady resitance.

Of course.. with a battery charging, as the voltage goes up ont he battery.. the potential difference chages, and thus less current flows.. reactance may change too.. so lots of things at play.

In the end.. if the unit was left on, as Bob said.. it was likely cooked.. and the charger just sped that up.. boost or no boost.

Yeah, I agree with you soundguy. What he is saying does not make sense. A 55 amp or 300 amp boost should have no effect on the ignition system. That's like saying you had a 600 CCA battery in your tractor and went to 900 CCA and fried the ignition system. You must have done something else wrong, or something else is wrong.
