Just reading Paul's post below and it reminded me of something I read a long time ago. That the point gap does indeed effect the timing of an engine. A failing memory tells me that the wider the gap, the more retarded the spark. But I could have this bassackward.

Ron..... ..yer semi-correct. Once yer points are set correctly and your timing is correct. The points rubbing block wear closes down the points gap and RETARDS the timing. Which is a semi-safety kinda thing. Retarded timing is necessary to START yer engine. It should be obvious, iff'n the closing of the gap increased the timing, you eventually couldn't start the engine.

I always set the points gap for "maximum gap" spec or "minimum dwell" spec; so natural wear of the points rubbing block will continue to allow engine to start.

Note: spark advance is necessary for maximum power and economy, just tuff to start iff'n advanced..... ..Dell
