hey guys, today i had a heavy disk on the ole 9, whitch let the front wheels have almost no weight on them. i took hold of the front wheel and moved it back and fourth, and i could see the axle and radius rod move back and fourth, went to other side and the same thing. i was under the assumption that the front axle was stationary. do i have a problem or what? tia RP

RP - If the axles went fore and aft, you have a problem. They are supposed to go up and down around the axle pin, but that is all. If the 1-3/4" pin is not worn, and the center axle bore is not worn, all you need is a new bushing. They are still available from New Holland dealers, and there are several on E-bay. If your pin or center axle is worn, a little more work is involved. The axle pins are available too. If your center axle bore is egg shaped, and you are willing to send it to me, I can make a new custom fit oil impregnated bushing, and bore out your center axle to make it round again. The cost will be about $12.00 plus any shipping involved. Greg

Sounds like worn pivot pin or if you are lucky it will just be the pivot pin bushing. If it is worn bad and you use it on a lot of uneven ground you will soon see that one of your lower nipples on your distributor cap will be broken. Mine was broken when I got it and I soon discovered I had to replace the pivot pin bushing. Also(not to get folks all stroked out again) but I also installed the pivot pin spacers on my 2N, like the 8N came out with.

The front axle is on a pivot, so that on uneven ground all wheels stay on the ground.

On yer 4x4 pick up yer frame is flexible for the same reason.

Some of yer early model Ford rangers were too stiff to keep all of the wheels on the ground, on uneven ground, and that made their 4 wheel drive nearly useless. You could git them stuck on the shoulder of the highway.

Had the same problem on my 2n, I installed new pin and bushing, but still had to shim the rear of the pin so it wouldn't hit the cap. I am replacing the radius arm pins/bolts as the is about 1/4" of play at the front axle attachment point. I shimmed the ball socket at the foot pegs with plastic oil jug material 2 years ago, still working good.
