I am ready to reinstall the stering upper housing and the gears but I am having difficulties understand the manual , it;s a simple way of doing the alignment ? , you guys now any tricks ? My other question ..: It's a god idea to grease the bearing race, sector shaft, pinion and sectors whit bearing grease prior to installation ? or use oil ?

Here is a picture to help visualize the alignment during assembly. I have a 1942 9N, and I am rebuilding allot of mechanic"s on it.

I put assembly lube on my bearings. The 9N/2n are splash lubed so it doesn"t hurt to start with some lubrication on a dry bearing.

Let me know if you need any more pictures.

No need to pre grease.. you will be filling the box with lube after reassembly.

I found the fo-4 manual VERY clear on how to time the gears. In fact.. i can't think of anything to add or clarify as to what the manual states for timing the sectors and worm/ballnut.

All you are doing is locating the gear witht he master spline, and then counting teeth on each one and meshing them at the proper teeth.

Along with that, have the ballnut centered ont he range of motion of the worm, and have than in place when you time the sectors.. and you should be good to go.. same number of turns lock to lock.
