hello I have a early model 8n and wanted to change the leakey seals and when i finally got the upper rear seal to move I found that the seal channel was broken and was just wondering if I could just loosen the caps and drop the crank down as far as the bell housing lets me and slip in a new channel and seal.one more thing I want to replace the pistons and sleeves I made a puller out of a cast iron pully that i used a grinder to size to the sleeve a peice of all thread and a ballencer pully off an old cadillac I wanted to just try and do it engine and crank still attached and if I can drop the crank that little bit for the rope seal can I pick out the bearings too I am pretty confident that I can but want to see If anyone else had any luck thisway

I don't think you can replace the seal retainer and seal that way. The rope seal is a fairly thick thing and even with the crankshaft out it is hard to turn the crankshaft after the rear main cap is torqued down. I just don't think the crank will lower enough to do it. It's a pretty good chance of breaking the top seal retainer if you try to remove it with the crank still in it. They can get really stuck in the block. We all know how aluminum reacts when in contact with an unlike metal or material. It causes some sort of oxydation or electrolis that causes the aluminum to adhere to the metal next to it.

Then there is the old saying, "nothing ventured nothing gained!"?????

Did you know a cat can be skinned by starting at the nose and never have to cut the hide?????

If you're going into the engine that far anyway why would you want to not just take the crankshaft out completely so it can be inspected, miked and ground if it needs it? And remive the block and get it boiled out and magnafluxed, etc.

I am just afraid you will miss something major that needs repaired while you are in there. Wouldnt be very satisfying to have to tear it down a second time. Do it right the first time.
