Ran into an interesting problem and wondered if anyone else had encountered it. On one of the rear wheels, the hot rivets that hold the hub to the axle loosened up. There's about 1/8th inch of movement on the rivets. I already found another used one, and have replaced it. The guy I got the used one from said he had never seen that happen. I was wondering if anyone else has had this happen, what are the possible causes, and if there is a way to repair my old one, or is it hopeless?
Thanks for any info which can shed some light on this.

Thats fairly common. I had two loose ones on my 9N which I welded. That is the reason ford switched over to the one piece unit.

No, actually, it was the other way about. The hub/axle assembly was originally a one-piece unit, later modified to the rivetted assembly.

Finding someone to wallop hot rivets these days is not easy, and the whole thing has to be torn apart to back up the new rivet. When I found this problem on mine, I burned off all the rivets and replaced them with 1/2" grade 8 bolts and lock nuts. If the you get the length right there's exactly enough room to slip the bolt through from the inside.

I've since done this same repair on others and had no problem whatever. You could weld the loose rivet to the hub on the outside, I guess, but it'll still be loose on the inside unless you tear it all apart and weld the inside as well.
