I posted earlier that I am collecting parts to start a restoration of a 44' 2N. One of the responses to that post was "did I need a magneto" My question is this, should this year tractor have only a magneto to be correct, because my tractor has full 6V electrics including lights, which all look original to the tractor. It is definately a 2N, 3 spd trans, tubular radis rods, Freguson sys. badge on the grill, push button starter in the tranny cover, spring bails on the air cleaner. Do you think I have a later 2N with a 44' block? What are some of the casting codes or other clues I can look for to truly know the year of the tractor? BTW I don't know the engine serial number right off, but when I looked it up before it indicated it was a 44' 2N

Keith..... ..as best guess, ONLY the earlist 1942 2N's had magnetios instead of common squarecan frontmount distributor. Records are un-clear. The magneto'd 2N also had "arm-strong" starters (crank) and LUG'D STEEL wheels (rubber being used for tank-tracks) and NO BATTERY, (lead being used for bullets) NO STARTER, NO GENERATOR (copper being used for bullet shells)

Almost ALL EARLY 2N's were retro-fitted to rubber ag-bar tires, battery for starting motors, gennys for charging batterys. Surprizingly enuff, magnetos are relative trouble-proof. There just weren't many made due to WW2 SHORTAGES.

Do your research; Peterson & Beemer "Originality Guide" is good place to start..... . respectfully, Dell, who doesn't care about originality

44N Keith

I don't think lights are considered original, I believe they were optional. There is a picture that shows N tractors coming off the assembly line with no lights.

Look on the lft. side of the tractor, directly to the rear of the starter you will find a casting #. That # will look something like this. E104. Find that # and post it back here, or send me an Email, and I'll be able to tell you the month, day, and year of your tractor. Also I will need the ser# off the engine.
Email is open. And no you do not need a magneto to make the 2n original. The mag. was only on war-time mod's. GB

Keith....I think you are ok.Tractors with mags had the choke rod run out thru the grille to the front of the tractor because it had to cranked with a hand crank. Also they had steel wheels. Most were retro fitted with original electrical system.Go for it. don b
