The crankshaft pulley on my 49 8N appears to be wobbling quite a bit when the engine is running. When the engine is off the pulley and the ratchet are tight and has no wobble. Does anyone have an idea what would cause this or does something need to be replaced/repaired? Thanks---Tim

Hi 8N'r!
I have a 48 8N and had the same problem. I ignored it until it broke. The pulley outter rim separated from the inner core that attaches to the crank. Had to take the front end off to get to the thing to fix it. I think this is one of those things that often just wears out after 59 years. This site has good information and can lead you through the repair if you want to do it yourself. Good Luck!
Jack

When I got my 2N in '04, that is the first thing I saw. When I shut it down it made a clanging noise. It was the original stamped pulley and it was totally broken out in the middle. How it was cooling and charging and such is beyond my understanding. So that's when I pulled the front end and replaced it and while I was there saw that the king pin needed replacing..... .Bob stated that replacement pulleys are not expensive...Well, I was not so lucky. I guess I got took. I recall paying $52.00 for the replacement pulley. It is a heavy, solid pulley but no reason for it to cost that much.

This very site has the solid pulleys (loader pump drive ready) for less than $41.00.

I think this was one of the few things I have got at a local tractor place and seems like I sent someone by there to get it for me. If I had gone for it myself I would have left it laying on the counter. Pays to shop for these old parts just like it does for anything else..

The original pulley was stamped steel, and easily bent.

New pulleys are not expensive.

I did see one once, years ago, that had a loader, and the crank snout was worn, and the keyway "wallowed out", I suppose from the pulley not being tightened enough, and the load from driving the loader pump wiggled it around, and wore it.

Your pulley is bent. Simple solution. Look to make sure it's not broken out at the hub....then rotate the engine to find the low point and take a pry-bar and straighten it out on the engine.
Mine was the same way, two years ago. Who knows, I may have bent it myself when I rebuilt the engine and replaced the belt. Simple fix. No more problems.

Thanks, I will check this out first. I am thinking the pulley is just bent as I cannot move it at all by hand when engine is not running. Tim

Bingo! My 48 8N had one of those thick metal pulleys with the bolt holes for a front mounted hydraulic pump. I wanted it to be original, so I bought a good used one from the guy I got my replacement block from while I was doing the rebuild. Once I finally got the engine running I noticed it was wobbling so bad the fan belt was shaking horribly. With the fan belt on and tight, I rotated the engine until I found the low side on the pulley and put a pry bar between the pulley and the engine and bent it forward a tad. I had two low sides 180 degrees off (I guess the P/O used a puller to get the pulley off and bent it). The tight fan belt made sure the front edge of the pulley bent forward as well at the same time. It now runs nice and straight with no wobble at all.

HTH,
Dan

Dan---sound like what I have going on with mine. I will try to bend it back to where it should be first before replacing with a new one.--Tim
