my '50 8N has a miss somewhere. It starts fine, but will miss. Goes kinda like: Purrrrr , putt, purrrr, putt, putt! It's always one "putt", then two. It doesn't stumble when I go from idle to full throttle, but will start to miss again when it levels out. Sorry I couldn't explain this better. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Mine (51 8N 6V side mount) does the same thing. Always has in the year or so I've had it, but it may be getting worse. I've assumed the points need to be set (one of the few things I haven't done yet:-) The valve theory worries me...

When you figure out yours, please post.

Joe

Hold a dollar bill real tight between 2 fingers right near the tail pipe.. if on the put-put the dollar bill sucks up to the tail pipe ya might have a sticky valve.

Other way is to pop the valve covers off. might have to have monket fingers to do this.. but deffinately will show you if valves are hanging.

if so.. scrub stems down with MMO or atf and diesel / kero / mineral spirtis mixed. then add mmo or atf to gas.. and if you have some leftover MMO.. ad a bit to the oil..

Chasing slight exhaust irregularities can be very frustrating. Check tuneup items first. Will the idle mixture screw adjust both too rich when you turn it all the way in and too lean when you go too far out? If it doesnt you have carburetor problems or a vacuum leak. Are the points gapped correctly? Is there excess wobble in the distributor bushings or a worn distributor cam? Are the plugs burning cleanly or are they fouled? If all this checks out then you probably have burned or sticking valves, weak valve springs, or cam lobe or valve guide problems.
