Fuel Valve Cleaning Help

For the last week I have had problems with my 8N.
I figured it was a fuel problem cause when it would
act up I could pull the choke out and it would get
better. Today I couldn't stand it no more.
Early 1949 8N Front Mount Distributor 12volt.

I siphoned as much gas as I could get out of the tank.
Parked the tractor in a good place to work on it.
Then I turned off the fuel valve and removed the bowl.
Opened the valve and gas dribbled out. Closed the
valve back. I siphoned as much gas as I could get
out of the tank. Unhooked the fuel line.
Took the whole valve off the tank. Lost about a
gallon of gas out on the ground. Took the valve
in the house and sat at the kitchen table to work
on it. First I cleaned all the crud off the
outside, then I started on the inside. With the
valve open I could just barely blow thru it. So
I fiddled with it some and soaked it a lot and
finally got it to where I could blow thru the main
intake part of the valve. Still couldn't blow
thru the reserve part. Messed with it for another
hour and a half and still couldn't blow thru the
reserve valve. Finally gave up and mounted it
back on the tractor. Should I have used teflon
tape on the threads going into the gas tank? I
think it leaks a bit, not sure. Put the glass
bowl back on it and filled the tank with gas.
Opened the valve and the bowl leaked like crazy.
Couldn't get it to stop so I figured it needs a new gasket. I went and got a sheet of cork gasket
material and cut a gasket out of it. Installed it
and this time it didn't leak. Started it up and
went to finish plowing. Still no power. And
choking it didn't help any this time. It will sit
and idle ok. Misses a bit but it will idle.
Put put any load on it and it starts bogging down.

I'll clean that fuel line carb elbow tomorrow.
But I couldn't figure out for certain how the
reserve valve worked. With the whole valve out,
there was the threaded part that went into the
gas tank. and it had a screen on it, and sticking
up in the middle was a smaller tube. I finally
got the smaller tube to where I could blow thru it.
but when I tried to blow thru the bigger hole I
couldn't. And I couldn't see a hole down in there.
Sure would like to see a cross sectional view of
this valve. How can I get the reserve part
working again. And where do I go from there.
I'm thinking plugs and wires. Maybe a whole tune up.
Won't be able to do anything till this is all fixed.

Thanks in advance.

pooh, you do know that you have to open the cutoff about ten turns to open the reserve, and two turns to open the main, right? RP

I have always used 1.5 turns for main and all the way for reserve. I'll start using 2 turns for main.
And I will be shutting the fuel off when in not in use from now on. Never did that before.

You are on the right track.

Yes use Teflon tape on the threads.

At one time what you are describing was the way mine was.

I like to have never got all the packed in rust from all the years out of it even with an air compressor, but with the air compressor, small wire picks and the such I finally got it back, all cleaned all out, it was a job though, and you still have to figure out all the places it has possibly packed up below there.

I'd guess your carb elbow filter will look about the same, full of crud. If you can keep using your old valve I'd do that rather than buying new. Then you have to hope you get one that doesn't leak. This site has gaskets that fit the bowl and so does NAPA, seems I need to replace mine whenever I empty the bowl.

Yup!!

Mine is still the original, (at least that I got with it).

The cork tends to shrink from the now days gas.

I am told by one of the great folks here:

NAPA part # 730-9506 for the good rubber o-ring gasket; I must have 3 or 4 in the box. I've given up ever trying to use that same gasket twice & it's rubber.

Tip # 10:

I went in Napa today and they said forget it.
They didn't even have any cork gasket material sheets.
I went over to AutoZone and bought a roll big enough to make several dozen gaskets for it. Cost was about $5. If I had gotten that Napa part number first I would have asked for that.
I'll work on it some more tomorrow.

Hope the spark plugs come out easy.
Don't know how long they been in there.
The plug wires got a lot of oil and grease on them.

Have you got a part number for the spark plug wires. I know to get the AL437 plugs.

Pooh..... ..ANY GENERIC 4-cyl COPPER-CORE sparkies re-wire kit (cut to fit lengths) will work. When I replaced my sparkies 15yrs-ago, I went to the local HOT-ROD shop and bought come COPPER-CORE silicon rubber RIGHT-ANGLE sparkies for PONTIAC-V8. Simple, eh?..... ...Dell, the sparkie-meister

Thanks. I remembered seeing something about them here but couldn't remember what it was. Copper core wires, check. Will see about picking up new plugs and wires tomorrow.

Will clean the carb elbow tomorrow and the air filter.

In the fuel valve where is the inlet for the reserve. I took the screen off and pulled the main tank pipe stem out and still couldn't see a hole for the reserve. I can't clean it if I can't see it. This is where a cross sectional view would really be handy.

Thanks.
