8N Hydraulic Mystery

I have owned several 8N's through the years. I did some trading and ended up with another one. I picked it up yesterday, and the tractor is pretty rough but everything halfway works. It is serial #503768. As I was checking it out I noticed that it does not have a position control lever. Will a 9N/2N lift cover even fit a 8N? I did not have time to pull the inspection plates and see if it had a fork or a single control rod. This is just very odd to me, because the pumps for the models are different.
I have never owned a 8N with this high a serial # and was wondering if they did away with the draft control in the later years.
Thanks,
Rodney

I want to thank everyone for their comments. You know that it is hard to put a price tag on knowledge being that it is free if you will just shut your mouth long enough to listen. I don't care what you are doing someone has done something similar before and can save you alot of time by just listening.
Thanks again and have a great day.
Rodney

The 9N/2N pump and lift housing fit the 8N perfectly. Henry really threw it to Harry on this one! Sometimes some people fail to honor a gentleman's handshake agreement. You got to be a gentleman first!

Don't slight either one.

Both were engineering geniuses.

Neither was particularly good at business.

You know they tried to have Mr. Ford committed one time.

Had him on the stand, in court.

The prosecutor asked him, Mr. Ford, I bet you can't even tell us what what the day of the month is.

Mr. Ford said, nope, I don't know, but if I do need to know, I DO know who to ask to find out.

Look that up in yer Funk & Wagnalls!!

I got some more stories about Mr. Ford I will try to share.

We had a very late 1952 8N that had both levers.

Hey Rodney, sounds like your valve is not engaging soon enough if you must go nearly to the end of travel to engage the lift. Loosen the four bolts that attach the lift handle to the housing and remove your inspection plate. Move the handle plate around until your pressure valve activates immediatly when you lift the handle. It's easier than I'm making it sound. Maybe someone can explain it better.

I have a n early 8n with a front mount distributor. When I first tore it down I was surprized to find a fork operated pump. I think the early 8n's were made without the position control, but I thought they had the later model single contact arm. Sounds like youv'e got my situation.

Rodney..... ..you'd haffta be very clever to put the non-position control cover plate on a 4-speed tranny'd 8N. But you don't have to be very clever to re-engine a 3-speed 9N chassis with a later 5-nipple sidemount 8N engine. ALL years of flathead N-Engines are interchangeable.

TIP: check yer tranny shifters. 3-speed, its a 9N/2N; 4-speed its an 8N.

Simple, eh?..... ...Dell

Everything on the tractor apears to be 8N except the lift cover. Steering sector, hubs, brakes, 4 speed transmission are all 8N. I guess I really don't know what I have until I tear into it. Whatever it is, it works. I does not work great.
The lift is very slow and will only lift when the sector handle is almost to the top. What gets me is that you can hold the load at any position and raise and lower at any position. I don't think you can do this with a straight 2N/9N setup. Who knows.
Thanks for the help.
Rodney
