Got the fuel system all cleaned out and back together. There wasn't a screen in the carb elbow.

Put new plugs and plug wires in it today. Champion H12 plugs and wire core plug wires. Runs better but it is still not right. Guess the next step is the distributor. 8N frontmount.

What do I need to get to do this right.

I know points and condensor. What about a rotor button and cap. Anything else I should get. I will be picking all this up at TSC. I would order the kit from YT Mag but I need it before it could be shipped to me.

Thanks.

IF AUTHENTICITY DOESN'T MATTER, INSTALL AN INLINE FUEL FILTER. THE ELBOW SCREEN DOESN'T CUT IT. AS FOR THE DIFFICULTY OF WORKING ON THE FRONT MOUNT DISTRIBUTOR, GET USED TO IT, IT IS A HIGH MAINTENANCE COMPONENT. SOON YOU WILL TWIST YOUR FRONT AXLE ON A DITCH AND BREAK THE NUMBER TWO POLE (REPLACE CAP)THEN YOUR GAP WILL MOVE, (REMOVE AND FIX) ECT,ECT,ECT

I have a front mount 8N also. I have found Tisco points for the front mount Part#ATK6FFR is a good set but Part #APN12000ABSR is junk. TSC in my area sells both. I don't know what the difference is but any time I got the junk set they don't last more then several hours and I have to adjust them. Several times I could not not even get them to adjust correctly out of the package. If I need points and all they have is the APN set I then go some place else. TSC front mount caps can also be junk. I have got several that would not sit flush. At $9 or $10 a piece it is really a pain to take them back with the cost of gas. If I need the parts now I go to NH or just wait for shipment from this site. If I ever convert to 12 Volts and electronic ignition it will be because I got tried of trying to find good front mount points.

I'd do it all, cap, rotor, points and condenser. That way you know you have all good parts up there since the front mounts aren't as easy to do as the side mounts are

Sounds reasonable to me. Is there anything else in there that should be replaced while I'm at it.

Would love to upgrade to electronic ignition but that's not in the budget this year. And not sure it can be done on this tractor. Can it?

Thanks.

Yea, they make EI kits for 6v frontmounts, but they are close to unreliable because of the low voltage. As soon as you get a slightly weak battery, the voltage from the coil will drop below the minimum needed for the EI to work, and then you get nothing. So, if you really want EI, a 12v conversion is necessary. Now, figure the cost. That kind of money will buy you a lot of points! The worst case you might have is a distributor in need of bushings or a rebuild. I change the points/condenser/rotor in my 50 frontmount every two years....if I think about it! Chances are it could go 4 or 5 years. If you get quality parts & the distributor is not worn out, you would have to be putting a lot of hours on the tractor to need a points/condenser change more than once a year. And, if your heart is set on EI, make sure you do get it running correctly w/ the points first. It would be a shame to get the EI installed only to find out the distributor needed work! I agree w/ old.....I just don't see the need for EI.

Yep it can be done but I don't like them but thats just me I guess. I can't think of any thing else you should need as long as its running now so the other parts most like are still good and the other parts would be doing a rebuild of the distubutor any how.
