Hi all, Pulled the lift cover to replace Hyd. piston due to fast leak down under load. Once I got the cover off, noticed quite a bit of rust under the cover. Tore the cover apart and cleaned everything. Removed the cylinder and used a air hose to blow the piston out. Once out, I looked at the piston and seen it was replaced with the newer style NAA piston with O-ring. What was not there was the backing washer. The O-ring was also streched bad. It almost fell off the piston on its own. I suspect the previous owner forgot to put the backing washer on and probably had the O-ring twisted when he put it in there. I installed the new piston anyway with the new O-ring and backing washer and slid it back in the way it should be. Nice tight seal now. Now I got a extra NAA piston. LOL. I have extra O-rings and backing washers just incase I decide to get another N tractor. I am replacing the safety valve in the morn and cleaning out the casing also. Will the lack of a backing washer cause a big leak down like that? When I had the bush hog on the back, it would leak down to the bottom within 30 seconds once I released the hydraulics.

Sounds like the O-ring was in really bad shape. This was probably caused by the missingbackup washer. The backup washers purpose is to protects the O-ring as I understand it. Did you look inside before you disassembled it to see if you had a stream of oil coming from the piston? Most likely you did since the O-ring was stretched. This was most likely your whole problem.

Hi tom, Yes, I did and did see a stream of fluid coming down from the piston. I was not sure if the lack of a backing washer would mess up the O-ring like that.

That should have been your whole problem but by putting the new safety relief valve you should definitely solve the problem just in case it was leaking. My Dad's was leaking down really fast and he had no leakage from the top and his whole problem was the safety valve.
