After putting new upper & lower bearing cups & cones on my steering gear worm gear shaft I have no end play but have preload. There were .035 in shims when it came apart. I pulled the shaft out and verified the cups are fully seated.I don't have any shims but could make a gasket to get it within the end play spec range. All that said I guess my question is if it's normal to have to shim it so far out to get the desired end play ? Thanks for your help. Greg

Ok,I'll make a gasket out of some material that is about .035 and that will leave me with the 9 steel shims to take it all the way out to .070 if need be. Good day to be making gaskets, it's 38 below outside this morning. Thanks for your advice. Greg

New bearings and cups can be different thicknesses, you could install these in a different spot, etc. As Hobo says - this is EXACTLY the reason for these shims. You can get more from New Holland or your favorite parts supplier.
