Its an early 8N motor, tranny and rear are 2N or 9N. Converted to 12v.

It was running fine last fall. I didn't run it again until about the middle of DEC. I started it up to plow snow and it had no power whatsoever. It could still move (barely) at that time and I nursed it off the driveway and parked it. I started messing with it again about a week ago.

It will start, idle and run the PTO but if I let the clutch out with the tranny in gear it will kill the motor. A guy at work said it sounded like points. I figured that was a good guess, Ive owned the tractor three and a half years and had never looked at them. It turned out the P.O. had made a mess of the dist during his version of a 12v conversion (I posted about this a week or so ago) one thing led to another and I ended up installing a Pertronix kit and a new dist shaft bushing today. I reused my old can coil and plug wires (which are ancient) because I didn't want to change too many things at once in case there was trouble after the Ignitor install. I have new wires and a new can coil that came with the kit sitting here ready to go on.

After I got the ignitor installed today there was absolutely no change at all. It starts right up and idles, when I let the clutch out with it in gear it dies.

Fuel is filling the glass bowl when I open the valve so I guess it's flowing ok. Two years ago I rebuilt the carb, installed a new fuel valve and had the tank cleaned and sealed. Could it be a carb adjustment?

I forgot, it"s got an aftermarket keyed ignition switch with three wires instead of the original setup. The key will start the tractor but won"t kill it. I have to choke it or shut the gas off to shut it off.

What else should I look for? I"m stumped.

Pikey..... ...first off, it ain'cur carb.

You write..... "After I got the ignitor installed today there was absolutely no change at all. It starts right up and idles, when I let the clutch out with it in gear it dies"..... .did you know a worn tranny shifter plate can put yer tranny in TWO-GEARS at the sametime, and guess what??? It'll KILL yer ENGINE, toot-sweet!!! I'm guessin' that yer engine doesn't die when tranny is in NEUTRAL??? or clutch pedal clomped down.

As for the 3-wire ignition key switch, iff'n done correctly, the engine will die when switched off. Iff'n NOT CORRECT, then guess what??? It don't die. I have NO PROBLEM with using an aftermarket 3-wire ignition switch inplace of the weaksister OEM 2-wire switch.

Right now it sounds like yer chasing 2-gremlins at the same time. And they are NOT RELATED except by being on your tractor that has been farmerized by an incompetent shadetree mechanic..... ..respectfully, Dell

I know what you mean about the shifter plate Dell, I had it replaced two years ago. Had a new clutch put in and all the leaking seals replaced at the same time. I'm not going to say that it couldn't happen again, and I will check it out just in case, but it's not acting the same this time. It was moving when I tried to plow with it in Dec. It just had zero power, it took half a minute to move ten feet. I parked it, and the next time I tried it she won't go. It'll lurch forward but the motor dies before it'll actually move.

I think the ignition switch is installed correctly because it used to shut it off, it just quit one day. I think it just needs to be replaced.

Thank you for the help!

How about your breaks. It’s unlikely both would lock up, but they’re easy to check. Just jack up the rear end and turn one side. If the other side turns both breaks are free. If the trany is in neutral, you should be able to move both sides in the same direction at the same time. If you can not the trany is locked up.

would a governor problem cause this? Releasing the clutch and motor dies from a lack of throttle? I dont know. Just a thought

If she starts and idles fine I'd say your problem is after the motor. Can your rock her back and forth in nuetral? Sounds like a brake problem. Try jacking the rear wheels off the ground and spining them. Just my 2 cents
