Hey guys I could use some help here, I just bought a 1950 8N with side mount distributor thats been sitting for Quite some time. so I went to the local napa store to get ignition parts , when i got home nothing matched the distributor. I also went to the local farm store they had nothing that matched, This old cap is smaller than the new one and has a round plastic washer shaped disc between the distributor and the cap that the rotor goes through, I see no numbers on any of the old parts including the distributor that i can see with out pulling it, I would eventually like to convert this over to a electronic ignition. can any one help? I had a sidemount 8N a couple years ago that had a funky distributor in it, too. It sounds like the same one. I took the parts I needed into an auto parts store with me and looked through an ignition parts catalog at the picture pages in the back until I found what I needed. The application was listed only as "industrial". Don't know what it came out of or where it came from, but it worked!

Rocky..... .you write..... ."This old cap is smaller than the new one and has a round plastic washer shaped disc between the distributor and the cap that the rotor goes through"..... .yep, that domed plastic water-shield is an UPGRADE from the NAA distributor. KEEP-ITT.

As long as the cap fits the notches and the rotor fits the cap, the "tallness" of the replacement cap ain't an issue..... ...Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

Hey Guys, none of the new napa parts would fit on this distributor except maybe the condensor, the new caps diameter swallows the top of this distributor and the new rotor is not even close, tractor serial# *8N315823* right side mount distributor

Hey Dell, Rocky here, this disc is flat,no dome to it, and is wore to the point that the old cap fits very loose. and the new napa cap is larger in diamiter

Well Rocky..... .donnno what to tell you. The NAA domed shaped waterproofing shield is a "retro-fit" to the 8N sidemount distributor. YOU DON'T NEED IT.

All you really need it the cap to solidly fit the distributor body without rocking. (otherwize, it effects yer ignition timing) And you need the rotor to rotate without breakin' stuff. You do realize rotors don't "touch" the distributor metal nipple contacts, don't you? Some 5-nipple caps don't lock without the extra spacing of the p/n: FAA-12239-A, cover assy, distributor breaker dust. ($10, cheap)..... ..Dell, yer self-appointed sparkie-meister

Hey Dell, sorry to bother you again, so lets say this cover assy.works with the old cap, where can I find points and rotor to fit this distributor. the napa rotor will not slide on to the post.
the napa cap swallows half of the distributor housing. I feel I have an oddball diistributor here.thanx Rocky

Rocky..... .don't really know. Sounds like you have sumptin' that some el-cheapo shadetree mechanic jambed in the hole. Usually, theres some "obscure" oval riveted identification plate somewhere on the distributor body. Time to PULL the distributor OUT, and take it into a REAL ignition shop for more educated guesstimates. I doubt a tractor shop or autoparts store would know. I shure don't know.

Otherwize NEW sidemount distributor. $300, (not cheap)..... ..Dell
