I changed oil in my 48 8N when I got it last year and found 3/4 " of very hard sludge in the bottom of the cartridge case which was hard to remove. I am going to change the trans/diff/pump oil and am afraid I will find the same condition or worse around the pump. I am afraid of trying to scrape the sludge out. If don't get all the grit and grime out can the pump be damaged by the remaining loose sludge? I thought I would just change fluid and see if performance improves. Thanks for any imput.

I just had a tractor that had gunk so thick that it had to be broken up and scraped out of the drainhole with a screwdriver. After removing as much as would come out, I put a few gallons of kerosene in, jacked the tractor up, and ran it for about 10 or 15 minutes in various gears. Drained the kerosene and put in new 90 weight. The results were amazing.

Allthumbs: I cleaned my sump out with about 2 gallons of diesel fuel. I used a pump up sprayer, caught the diesel fuel in buckets, strained it through a painter's screen and used it over and over again until all the "gunk" was gone. GA Jim

That sludge in the bottom is very hard to clean, i use gasoline and find out that is not dissolving that stuff that easy I scrape it as much as possible whit a spoon and wash with gasoline , that stuff is there for 60 years...

I would not recommend gasoline. That is too dangerous. Mineral spirits or diesel fuel works just fine.
