Thank you for your prompt replies! I'm new to these boards, so you couldn't know this, but I am a middle-aged man who grew up in a farm family, and in addition I like to collect and read books about old automobiles (can't afford the cars themselves) so I am familiar with the history of the Kettering ignition sytem (Henry Leland and the Dewar Cup and all that) and also with its care and feeding. I'd never seen an 8-volt conversion, though; just twelve. I also run a Super C Farmall and a 1966 Volkswagen with the original 6-volt systems, and the neither has ever failed to start (although I confess to cranking the tractor and pushing the VW), so I don't buy into the idea of conversion for its own sake. Don't forget, though, this is a neighbor's tractor. He killed the battery trying to start it, and I'm sure he's getting all kinds of simplistic advice like, ''If you convert it to twelve volts it will be easier to start.'' He's going to get a new battery; he says the tractor never hit ONCE while he tried to start it, so I believe it's probably an ignition problem. As soon as he gets the battery I'll go over there with an old plug I keep for such purposes and my volt-ohm-meter and see what's what. I'll report back if I find anything interesting.
