8-volt battery chargers

It has been brought to my attention that some people are still running 8 volt systems, and can find batteries, but can't find chargers.

I would be happy to design and prototype an eight-volt charger, but don't have time to build working models. But it will be a simple device and I'll try to use commonly available parts, so anyone with a little soldering experience should be able to build one.

Any interest?

I've found that a 9v battery eliminator or 9v 'power pack' or a 9.6v Nicad charger for those model race cars works perfectly.

Alternately it would be easy to take an 7808 regulator tip packaged regulator and bias the ground with a resistor or diode ( FVD ) and get it in the 9 - 9.2v range.. or take one of the variable v-reg ic's in DIP packages at radio shack, and a a couple dolalrs of support hardware to accomplish the same thing.

As a 3rd shot, you could make a zenir shunt setup and calibrate it for your desired charge voltage and add it to a 'dumb' 12v charger.

As a 4th shot, a series pass regualtor circuit using a 2n3055 TO packaged device could be rigged up fast and be pretty high wattage.

The engineer's handbooks on basic semiconductors by Forest Mims at radio shack covers all these possibilities... Pretty much less than 10$ in parts and following a schematic...

I have owned my 9-N for 24 years. It has always had an eight volt battery installed in it. I have used a 6- 12 volt charger on 6-volt setting all this time. Leave the charger on it proper time and I have had NO problem. My opinion a special charger AIN'T needed.

Bingo, Bob, that's exactly what I was thinking about doing. That's how I do most of my electronics home brewing; find a circuit I like and adapt it to fit the job/parts on hand.

However, a little looking around showed me some golf carts use 8 volt batteries and chargers are available for them. I found one at Batterystuff.com; any interested parties would do well to make sure these are suitable for 8-volt tractor batteries (current rating, etc.,) but I rather suspect they are.

a battery charger for a golf car(6 8volt) is putting out 48 volts not 8

Why not take a commonly-available 12-Volt automatic charger and design a "tweak" to the control board to lower the setpoint of the regulator by about 4.2 Volts?

Should be a LOT simpler than starting from scatch!
