I recently volunteered to help a neighbor start an 8N. It has the square coil, which if I've read correctly means it is a front-mount distributor.

I've been doing a little looking around in the archives, and I am astounded to learn I will have to pull the distributor to check the points!

Can anyone point me to thread where distributor removal is discussed? Using the keywords "distributor removal" pointed me to several threads, but I couldn't find one where the process of removing a front-mount distributor was actually the point of the thread.

AB, I just pulled mine yesterday for the first time. Took me less than 10 minutes. It really helped to have the coil off.

Aren't those 2 bolts different length? Can't the longer one hit a gear or something if in the wrong hole?

A.B. You have received all good advice. Just to add my 2cents. No sheet metal to remove & don't try to make a big job out of it, because it is not. Some leave the spark plug wires connected to the Cap. Pull the two clips on each side of the cap back to loosend it from the distributor and move it off to the side. Then swing the wire clamp that holds the coil to the distributor forward loosening the coil from the dist. Take the two 1/2 inch bolts out that are holding the distributor to the front of the motor. Take the distributor in hand and work on it on the kitchen table.(If the wife isn't around that is) Reinstall in reverse taking care that you line up the lobes on the dist. with those on the front of the engine as others have stated. It will take you about an hour to take it off, install new points or adjust and clean the existing ones and put the dist. back on. Simple eh? Good luck. Ron

Stuff a shop rag into the front axel cavity before you start. A bolt dropped in there is hard to retreive. Guess how I know! :-)

Remove the primary wire from the terminal at the top of the coil.

Remove the 4 spark plug wires from the distributor cap or remove 2 of the wires on one side and move the cap to one side out of the way.

Remove the two 5/16" bolts that attach the distributor and remove it.

When done checking it carefully install it making sure it's offset drive tang is installed correctly and that the distributor slips fully in place against the engine's front cover BEFORE snugging up the bolts.

If the drive tang is installed "180 degrees off" the tang will not drop into place into the camshaft and the distributor shaft will be forced forwards wrecking the distributor.

Can the distributor be removed without removing any sheetmetal? It sounds like getting the hood off is a real job!

Yes, it is much easier to do wif the hood off, but it is absolutely not worth the trouble. Ye only have two small bolts to remove to get it off.

The others have given good info.


Careful of the pig tail on bottom of coil.


Some people, when reinstalling, put the 2 bolts back on just a thread or two. You can then rotate the dist to get the tang lined up.


Careful you don't cross your plug wires on reinstall. 1-2-4-3 CCW if I remember right. Aint hard once ya get used to it. HTH....good luck....don t. .....

I just did a tune up on mine last week.
It all went real easy.
