A solenoid is a very simple thing. All it does is connect 2 terminals together or let them come apart, and not be connected, it connects them by using an electromagnet. I am concerned you may have an automotive solenoid instead of one for your tractor. Automotive solenoids work different to the one on on your tractor. Automotive ones have power supplied to their coil from the switch, and have their cases grounded to complete the circuit. Your tractor has power supplied to the coil from the battery terminal, and then ran to the switch where the switch grounds it to complete the circuit. If your wire going to the switch gets grounded anywhere else along the way it will energize the solenoid. Here is something I just made to diagram how how your solenoid on your tractor is supposed to work. You should be able to conect only the battery side to the solenoid, to the battery and do some testing on it. With only that hooked and not the starter side, nor the switch wire. Then hook the switch side to it's terminal, the solenoid should do nothing, if it clicks then something is wrong, if it doesn't click, then you should be able to push the starter button, and it should then click. Hope that helps.
