I just discovered the Internet info on ford tractors and dispite growing up
with 8Ns have learned more in the last few days than in the previous 35+
years. My dad had a what I believe was a 52 8N that had the cyclonic air cleaner
as well as a back hoe and many other toys purchased back in 1962
as luck would have it he sold it in about 1977 back when I was in Highschool
and not concerned about it as we had newer and more powerful tractors
on the farm. OH GOD I WISH I HAD THAT ONE BACK!!!!! @#%@#@!!! In 1995 I bought my own 8N, and by all accounts I now realize I paid too much for it but it had been semi restored and had new rims and tires and new sheetmetal
(Aftermarket) The up side is it has 11" rear rims and 12.4X28 tires which I really like and 600 16 front tires so from the side it looks like all tires. :) it also has a Blue body with gray sheet metal so it is all wrong from a original restoration point of view. I had the pto break when I was running a manure spreader and raised
the lift arms with hitch bar on and it hit the shaft (stupid) so I upgraded to the 6spline 1 3/8" kit The hydraulics need some serious work now as well, I only have about 1" or less
travel on the control to make them work and sometimes I have to put the draft control at a mid point to make them work at all, and from reading I learned that the knocking sound out of the pump is a bad sign as well :( I intend to get the booklet
and the jig from Zane to get the control issue straightened out and I have
a new cylinder and piston and relief valve for the pump but I guess the pump will need work now too but I am not exactly sure what that will take. Any suggestions? And the engagement for the PTO/HYD will slip-out from time to time and it feels like it is barely engaging only on the very end of the lever travel. Having read even more on the tractor I now realize that the left front steering
bushing needs replacement and I have leaks and slop in the left rear axel as well!
So I guess I am into brakes, bearings, and seals for the rear axel (both sides)
and I guess I should replace the front and rear engine seal as I have some leaks
now on the floor and that of course means I should, while its all apart change the clutch as it has had some hard use as well and now probably some oil on it as well too. And it could really use a new paint job with the proper colors to make it look
like new again. I have always said with authority stated that it is a 1948 ford 8N and I thought I knew for SURE, why? Because it is plainly cast on the right rear axel housing:
6-24-48 but after going though Johns site and reading the identify your tractor
page and then looking at the engine serial # (about 10 times!!) <>8N 472801<> and 8N-C cast near the starter. How the heck could I have a 1952 engine with a Front distributor????? Then Slooooowly..... ..... ..... ..... ..... the dim bulb in my brain went up a couple of watts and I realized that the distributor assy was bolted to the engine block and not a cast in item out the side
so my block IS a 1952 8N-C block but they bolted the 1948 front dist. To it,
now hells bells, why didn't they leave the darn side dist on it while the were going at it. I suppose they just got a long block, but gee wizz I wish it had the side dist
system on it.

Check ZANE's response to "Diagnosing 8N hydraulic problems" a few posts back, for help with some of your hydraulic issues.
I'll bet if you changed enough parts you could have a side distributor again — all depends upon how bad you want it.
The other trumpet, the transmission (maybe) the oil pan, and the hydraulic pump all have dates cast in them to help you figure out what might be the original parts.
Unfortunetly, the slop in the rear wheel might not be bearings. The hub and axle splines are notorious for becoming worn and sloppy, requiring replacement.
If you do split the tractor to do the clutch, it would be a good time to check or replace the front transmission seal as it could be a source of oil on the clutch.
Welcome back into the world of N Ford tractors.

N — joy.

Good luck were all praying for you. Don't know anything about the pump yet i haven't had to go into my 49 yet but a misaligned contols/leaking piston rings/bad cylinder can make a good operating pump sound bad. Such as dogbone/connecting rod hitting piston.Iknow the pump is expensive to rebuild but doesn't seem to be to difficult.

Again good luck
