just a new Idea has anyone tried to change the ratio between the PTO shaft and the tiller tines. I Know some are belt drive and it would seem to be any easy task to change the pulleys to up the speed of the tines. This coupled with a sherman and you should be successful.

Glad I didn't read this thread last week, cuz I spent half a day repairing my neighbor's 48" tiller so I could use it on my 8N. He has one o' them newer "green" tractors with live PTO. It was a bit tricky, but I managed a pretty decent job in about 5 different areas around the property (garden, flower beds, uneven ground areas). Fortunately, I had plenty-o-room to "set it down" and "bring it up" while moving. It definitely was akward, but it sure beat doing it by hand. Think I spent $100.00 and 6 hrs. repairing, and about 20 minutes tilling (My neighbor DID reimburse me for the repair.)
Best-o-luck!

Pat..... .Every spring, the N-Board gets numerious inquerries about rototilling with the N-Tractor, unfortunately, all the N-Tractors are too high ground speed for rototillering. Even the common "Sherman" aux tranny between the clutch and the main tranny is not much help there because it also slows down the PTO speed too. There is a rare and fragle "Howard" aux tranny behind the main tranny and the differential that does slow down the ground speed, but I don't know of any "Howards" for sale and most that I've heard about are "broken" and no parts any more.

Back in the 70's, I saw several rototillers with aircooled engines that had a 3-point hitch attached. The N-Tractor's 3PH would drag the rototiller thru the soil and hydraulic's lift the tiller at the end of the row and turn around, and then drag the aux engined rototiller back the other way. Worked pretty slick. Unfortunately, I don't remember anything more about 'em, except it was down in Central California. Could have been a local machine shop fabrication job..... ...Dell

There was a post by one of the true great masters on this board a few weeks back. He speculated that it could be done, but it would take a series of step down aux. transmissions. Normally, the N series tractors are just plain too fast even in low gear to be effective at tilling. Perhaps you could find and old plow and disk and achieve similar results. The N's are great for plowing and disking.
