Hello,
I have a 1949 8n and I cant get it started.
The spark plugs where not sparking so through a series of events I have replaced the ignition coil, points, condenser, rotor and distributor cap. The spark plugs are now sparking.
I have thoroughly cleaned the air filter and carburetor. The carburetor has suction at the air intake and there is gas in the carburetor bowl. If any one could help I would appreciate it. Thanks, RDAllison

I'd shoot some ether in the carb to see if it will start at all. That will confirm spark or gas prob. Compression may need to come up for standard start. 4 yrs could have rings stuck, bad compression, hard start, etc. HTH

RD, Try new Autolite 437 spark plugs. Gap to 0.025" If you flood your engine, often the plugs will not get hot enough (because they leak to ground) in these low compression engines to ignite the air/fuel mixture.

Once you get your engine hot, you can swap out your old plugs one by one. You'll then have 2 working sets!

If you "flooded" it while it had no spark the spark plugs may be "wet" and NOT firing when installed and "under compression".

(Safely) burning them clean with a propane torch or replacing them MAY be necessary to get the engine to start.

If it has sat for 4 years first thing you need to do is fill the cylinders with tranny fluid and let it sit a couple days. Be sure to put the plugs back in to keep dirt etc. out. Then pull all the plugs after that couple of days and spin the engine over to clear out the cylinders. Reinstall the plugs and try to start it up. Doing the tranny fluid thing unsticks stuck rings and cleans the engine out. BTDT many times with old tractors and most of the time doing that helps a lot

Thats ok becuase all that has happened is that you have a valve or 2 open so its also getting down and around those valves. It can also help the other valves if you slowly turn the engine over a little at a time so the other valves open and do the same thing

Its close but cost 3 time as much and does the same thing. I like to fill the up full so the valves and cylinder walls get a good coating and cleaning.
