Hydraulic fluid change

I changed the lift fluid. Although performance is about the same, the pump thumping sound is quieter and also a clicking sound when in reverse is now gone. I don't understand why it had been clicking as the PTO turning the pump is the same forward or reverse. I had read in a previous post that changing fluid might get rid of the click.

Well, that was nearly interesting.

I have a few questions that may solve the "nearly"....

What was in it before you changed it?

Was it crud?

Did you do any clean up on tha innerds?

If so what did you do to accomplish that?

What did you go back with?

What area of the country are you in so that we can relate to the climate there?

Thanks for at least posting though.

Dunk...Sorry about not being more specific. This is a 48 8N. Got it last year. I don't know what was in it but it was caramel colored.
I sprayed diesel in and just managed to get my hand in behind the pump to remove a lot of the gunk which was about 1/2" deep but soft sludge, after about 2 gallons of diesel it was clean.
I put in 90wt. mineral oil. As I said it previously had a loud thumping sound which is now fairly faint. The clicking sound was only evident with the box scraper in the up position and moving in reverse. The sound seemed to come from around the area of the PTO shaft. That clicking sound is now gone. I was wondering if anyone had an idea what may have been causing that clicking. I live in north Texas and the temperature had been in the mid 70s when I did the change.

Cool, no telling what was in it (including water?).

The GL-1 90wt mineral oil is pretty thick stuff, and should take up a lot of noise making possibilities.

The pump is a piston type pump that works off of eccentrics on the PTO shaft there could be some play there that would cause a sound with thinner oil.

Most all current day hydro pumps pump a continuous stream, and that stream is diverted back to the reservoir, or into the cylinders as appropriate for you you want done.

That is not the way the piston pumps in these tractors work, essentially when the lift is not being raised, a valve cuts off the oil supply to the pumps, which causes a vacuum in the piston cylinders, that could cause a soiund, that the thicker oil compensate for.
