Over-run Coupling Question

On a neighbor's tractor, if I grab the shaft on the over-run coupler, I can wobble it with my hand! It moves about 3/8 inch.

Surely, this isn't normal. Or is it? I'm not familiar with these.

(I know, safety. I automatically flick the PTO out of gear whenever I push in the clutch on any tractor I operate. This allows the tractor to stop quickly when necessary and absolutely prevents my getting off the tractor with the PTO engaged. Not as foolproof as an over-run coupler, but still effective.)

Assuming it can't be repaired, what's a replacement run these days?

My new speeco one has about 1/4" wobble in it. I'd check that one to make sure it is lubed.. it meay be wearing out prematurely. Also.. I have seen some people put a 1 3/8 ORC onto the oem 1 1/8 shat by rigging it with a pin.. and the pin is the only thing coupling th orc tot he pto.. and it wobbled ALOT!

That seems to be quite normal for the ones I have.

You may want to take off the grease fittings and make sure the pin is still in place. If so, it shouldn't be a problem.

A new ORC runs about $40. The are available on this site, Agrisupply, etc.

Most of the ones I have also have a lot of free play in them. I think its pretty much normal for them. Plus I also think that if its working as it should then why fix it. You know the old say if it isn't broke don't fix it. LOL
