Okay I am all set to adjust the valve tappet clearence on my 8n. I got the special tappet holders and wrench. I just have one question, I have done valve clearence on an aircooled VW and am familiar with the procedure. My question is this how do I rotate the engine to TDC? the engine is in the tractor not on a stand. is there a place on the crank to put a wrench on to rotate it to the proper position? I have the FO-4 manual which does not say how to turn the engine into position. Thanks for help.

Tranny in neutral. PTO unengaged. Spark plugs OUT. With the plugs out a feller can sit on a upside down 5 gal plastic bucket an turn 'er over with the fan. Yer butt won't ever have to break contact with the bucket. Old fat folks know these things.

Another way is to put your transmission in neutral - remove the spark plugs - engage the PTO - and turn the PTO with a wrench.

You can also "bump it" over with the starter if it is still all hooked up...

If it's "as-original" it will have a "hand crank socket" in the head of the bolt holding the front pulley onto the crankshaft.

Rob..... .what Bob sez..... .and the crankshaft crownhead bolt it torqued to 150ft/lbs and as long as yer not pullin' against compression (sparkies outta the holes) turn yer crankshaft thru the radiator crank hole with long extension. TIP: crownhead bolt is 1-5/16 hex..... ...Dell

Brother! Well met!

If you set the valve lash on a flat-head Ford (or almost any other old tractor engine) with the care and accuracy you used on your VW you will have no problems. You will also have to do the job much less frequently.

You may already know this, but water-cooled engines don't generally "eat" their exhaust valves the way the air-cooled VW will if the lash is allowed to creep slightly out of tolerance.
