Inside my newly sandblasted wheels-what to do?

I have nice clean looking front wheels on the outside. Inside there was a lot of rust that left deep pits after sanblasting. What can I use to coat the inside of the wheel. I want to prevent rust and keep the tube from rubbing and sticking to the wheel. Any ideas?

Thanks for the ideas. I may look into the bed liner stuff Jack.

I agree with the others.. clean the rust up.. use a good primer and paint... don't worry about the pits.. IF you do get tub abrasions inthe future.. boot the rim.. or roll a layer of duct tape in the 'bed' of the rim. I've seen tires like this hold up fine for decades..

I use two part etching primer on the inside. If properly sandblasted like the outside was it should be the same except for the pits. I don't worry about the pits on the inside for my lifetime.

I found a set of original Ford scripted front wheels at my local boneyard. I wire wheeled them inside and out to get the rust out (sandblasting would have been MUCH easier). The insides were corroded and rough as well, but solid. I sprayed mine with a thick coating of phosphoric acid after I wire wheeled them to stop any small amount of rust hiding down in the pits and cracks. Then I put a good thick coat of enamel paint on the inside and out - that should work.

I do like the idea of using the truck bed liner paint. I would still coat in phosphoric acid though to stop the rust.

Good luck,
Dan

Dave:

The proper way to protect your rims is to sandblast, prime and paint them inside and out.

Over the past winter I did this to 6 front and 8 rear rims. It is a lot of work but the rims rust from the inside out and you cannot protect them unless you do it.

If the insides of the rims have been sandblasted you can use glyptol in place of paint to coat them. Glyptol is thicker than paint and will help to cover over the pits.

I would put on a good coat of primer, and a heavy coat of paint. I have heard that spray on bed liner works good too.

I used the bed liner type paint on some rusted rims and also on the pitted battery tray on the 8N. Fills the pits pretty well.
