I happen to see a couple of 8N tractors the other
day,that had a setup that I have not seen.There
was a quart jar mounted to a pipe, that ran through the air intake cover, anyone know what this is?No one was around to ask.

They are pre cleaners . Some were made by the Harco company . If seen two styles , the ones with fins (pic) and the smooth style the still sell .

Add on air cleaner.. it swirled incoming air and let larger particles settle out before hitting the oil bath. Cyclone was a popular one..

These were standard equipment on many Farmall tractors.

In an outstanding example of the way American coporations USED to treat their customers, Farmall also made theirs work with a standard canning jar, knowing full well this would almost eliminate the sale of replacement jars across their parts counters!

Can you imagine Ford or Chevy (or for that matter, Toyota or Kubota) doing something like this today?

Computer industry go into it to early on in the 60-70's.. Connector wars.. many times identical hardware was tied to a proprietary connector in order to prevent you buying 'competition' hardware..
