Just unloaded into the driveway a 49 8N that I purchased over the past three weeks. I just noticed a lever about 7-8 inches long with knob on end situated on a round plate to the leftside and a little behind the seat (close to where the left brake locking mechanism is) and I have no idea what it is for. Still have yet to get familiar with the whole tractor and purchase the manuals I'll be needing for it. Thanks ahead for any answers and hope to learn much from everyone

Thanks everyone for your help. Today I finally had a chance after church and between skimmimg boiling sap to check out what everyone said. Sure enough, with lever in the rear position PTO is engaged and hydraulics work, with it forward the PTO is disengaged and so are hydraulics. Yes ordering manual asap. Loved the four wheel drive line, if only.

That is the PTO engage lever. Push it back to engage the PTO.
You need your PTO running to use the hydraulic lift 'cause the PTO shaft runs the pump.

The other little lever on the right side (starboard) under the seat is the Draft/position control switch. Forward for ground engaging impliments (eg. plowing) up for fixed position pulling -- brush hog, trailer etc.

Mash the clutch pedal, push the lever forward, and it will engage the PTO. Mash the clutch pedal, pull the lever back, and it it will disengage the PTO. Might be the other way 'round. Mine stays engaged all the time so's I can use the lift so's I really don't remember which way is which, but that is what it is for. Don't have much call to use the PTO. If there is a cover on the PTO, take it off so as you can see which way to it works. Sure as shootin' somebody will tell you the correct way to make it work. The one under the seat on the other side is a little beyond my comprehension right now, although I know what it is for and how it works .

Vica-versa...forward is off, back is engage PTO. The lever under the seat/right is the position control lever. Up is disengaged..down is engaged. HTH

Congrats on the purchase. This is the PTO selector. I HIGHLY suggest you obtain an 8N operators manual - thay are a tad over $10 for the re-printed ones and comes with a wealth of info.

Good luck,
Dan
