My 8n starter will turn the engine over for few seconds then it makes a groaning sound. Is that the starter that needs to be replaced or the starter drive?
Thanks, RDAllison

6v or 12v? Could be a bad starter or a bad bendix.....or, it could be dirty, corroded cables/connections and/or a weak battery. Starter turns, engages the bendix.....then, not enough current is available to spin the engine. Start w/ the simplest & least expensive fix. Charge the battery, check the cables & see what happens. If that doesn't work, post back & you will get plenty of help!

I don’t know if its a 12v or a 6v starter. I know that there was a 12v conversion installed (the tractor was given to me to fix-up). The battery will not hold a charge so I have to charge it for a several hours and that is what happened.
I don't know how the starter works. How dose the starter get power to turn the engine?
Thanks, RDAllison

I'd say you have a bad battery; you'll need to replace it. That's how the starter gets the power to turn the engine. To get the current from the starter, you need clean connections & good cables, plus a working solenoid & neutral safety switch. To confirm that the starter & bendix are probably ok & your battery is bad, check out tip # 43, below. While you do have a 12v system, jumping it this way will put the 12v from the jumper battery directly into the starter.

I will try to help ya.....

Simple task first... charge battery.
make sure that connection are "clean and bright". This includes battery cables at battery and all the way thru to the starter itself.

Sometimes the engine fires for a quick time and the starter has done its job. However, if'N the engine doesn't continue to run instantly, the starter will start to hum.

More labor involved.... remove the starter and report back.

HTH...John,PA

That’s it exactly what it dose. I push the starter button and it turns the engine and it fires for just 1 second and then just hums.
I had already taken out the starter before I posted. Thanks, RDAllison

Well, from here on I have to refer you to a specialist....

Why doesn't the engine keep runn'N/?

Fuel, air and spark. Maybe flooded?

The experts are listening, I'm sure.

Have a great week-end. John,PA

As a coincondience, Mr. Mr. Allison was the name of my childhood DR. He assured my mother that NO further action was necessary for a simple childhood condition, at least for BOYS.
