I can’t get my starter to keep cranking until the tractor is all the way started. I tried to directly hook the battery to the starter by taking off the leads and putting a jumper cable on the battery (+) to post on starter and battery (-) to tractor bloke but that dose not give a spark. Is there any way to override the starter cutout after it thinks the tractor is started?
Thanks, RDAllison

R D, you might want to look at why the tractor doesnt keep running when it fires the first time. if its in good running condition, it should only need one hit. you could have weak fire or carb issue. RP

well its not really in running condition. It has not rune for about 4 years. So I have done a tranny fluid soak in the cylinders, cleaned the carb and air filter. I have replaced the spark plugs, ignition coil, points, condenser, rotor, and distributor cap. Any other things that might be bad? Thanks, RDAllison

Have you checked the compression? You may have a valve or two stuck open.

Dell and Jerry are right on, as usual. Another trick is to turn the engine over 4 times with the choke out and the switch OFF. Then turn on the switch and start it with the choke in. When it fires off it will keep running long enough to disengage the drive, and give you time to use the choke as needed to keep it running until it warms up.

If you are asking if there is a way to keep the starter drive engaged until the engine starts the answer is replace the starter drive gear with the newer type drive gear assembly.

Caution!!!!! Do not try the starter with it out of the tractor to see if it turns good etc. If you do you will engage the starter drive and it will not be possible to put the starter back in the tractor with it engaged. The engine or something else has to disengage the starter drive after it has been engaged by over speeding the starter drive mechanism that releases the drive gear assembly.

Allison..... ..its yer BENDIX internal 1-way pawls are majorly worn and NON-repairable. Time for a NEW starter Bendix. Recommend the improved "clutch" style starter bendix. $40 (cheap)

Heres the deal, yer starter bendix is RPM sensitive, just one-cough from yer sparkies is enuff to un-lock yer 1-way pawls inside the bendix and yer bendix comes un-screwed from yer flywheel ring. And obviously no-longer cranks yer engine..... ..Dell

Dell, could it just be the "weak sister" ignition switch ??

Bob..... ..yer semi-right (grin), weak sparkies caused by weaksister ignition switch is probably the reason it won't keep running, but problem as described is definitely a starter bendix issue..... ..Dell
