I have a 8n ford front mount dist, that has compression problems itried suggestions from this site but did not fix. smart thing to do is to have someone rebuilt it but I want to learn how to rebuilt it. because i have 4 other 8n that need rebuild in the future. My problem is that I am good enough mechanic to be dangerous. I found a video on this web site and my repair manual. Does anyone know of anything out there like mechanics for dummies. need help on the real technical stuff like bearing sizes and crankshaft measurement etc. any help would be appreciated.

There's always a first motor rebuild for everyone. And short of a lawnmower , a flathead Ford is about as simple as it gets. Go slow, ask questions, and label your parts so you can remember what goes were. Plenty of good advice here.

If I can rebuild an 8N engine - you can too. I had never seen the insides of ANY engine until I rebuilt my NAA Rustbucket's engine a few years back. I highly suggest getting an I&T shop manual, the engine rebuilding video, a good book is "How to Rebuild and Restore Farm Tractor Engines" by Spencer Yost (they actually use an 8N as their case study and rebuild it). Do a lot of research in the archives here, and ask questions you are unsure of. In short - RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH!

Check out the photo albums on my 1954 NAA and 1948 8N I rebuilt the engine on - a pic is worth a thousand words sometimes.
